Edward had chosen the location well. When Claire got out of the car, she realized they were at an abandoned refinery on the outskirts of town. She felt a chill of fear. Throughout the drive, she had tried to engage Nathan in conversation, but he had ignored her. She'd even left her phone at home by mistake.
Nathan gestured for her to walk ahead. Confused but compliant, Claire continued until she saw Louie tied up on the ground.
She immediately understood and tried to run, but Nathan grabbed her and threw her to the ground. She hit the edge of a concrete barrel, and the sound of breaking bone was audible. She cried out in pain.
When Louie saw who had arrived, he became agitated. Nathan signaled to Edward, who removed the gag from Louie's mouth.
"Pfft... cough, cough!" Louie coughed violently. "It was her! Nathan, it was her! She stole those documents. I never wanted trouble with you, Nathan—you know we didn't get along. If she hadn't approached me offering help, I would never have tried to cause you problems..."
Nathan looked at Claire. She had never expected Louie to be found—since hearing Nathan instruct Edward to find him, she had hired thugs to silence Louie permanently. How had Edward found him and brought him to Nathan?
Seeing Nathan's scrutinizing gaze, she crawled over in pain. "How can you believe him, Nathan? He's lying! Stealing documents... how would I even access your files? The recording clearly said it was Melody, you heard it yourself..."
"It was her!" Louie interrupted. He had thought he and Claire would simply part ways after their mutually beneficial arrangement, but this bitch had hired people to kill him. He would no longer help her!
"The recording... the recording was fabricated! Claire stole Melody's voice samples and used AI to create that file!"
"Louie, you don't want to live?" Claire abandoned all pretense of dignity and cursed. "What do you gain by slandering me? Who paid you off? You're such a good lapdog!"
"Am I the one want to die?" Louie had nothing left to lose. "If it weren't for Edward, I'd already be dead at the hands of your hitmen. You still expect me to help you?"
"What about the PDF?" Nathan, silent until now, didn't want to watch these two tear each other apart. On the way, Edward had briefed him on what happened—he had found Louie, but the man had fled like a frightened bird, only later revealing he thought Edward was another hitman hired by Claire.
"What PDF?" Louie looked genuinely confused, while Claire became extremely agitated. Edward immediately covered her mouth and restrained her.
Nathan displayed an image. When Louie saw it, the color drained from his face.
"If you don't talk, I'll throw you out there. I doubt you'd get far before disappearing from this world entirely," Nathan put away the photo, noting Louie's wavering resolve and casually threatening him.
As Louie hesitated, Nathan's phone vibrated—an unknown number.
"Where's Melody?" It was Jackson's voice.
"What do you mean?" Nathan had no desire to speak with Jackson, but why was he asking about Melody? Had something happened to her?
"Security footage shows the last person Melody met was Claire."
Hearing this, Nathan quickly approached Claire and gripped her chin, forcing her mouth open.
"Where did you take Melody?"
