The sound of the belt coming down reminded Maya of the cane at the Mitchell house. Just as she thought she was about to endure the same pain again, a man suddenly rushed into the courtyard, roaring, "Stop!"
Maya turned around and saw a young man had entered the courtyard—he was the one who had stopped Lily's father.
As soon as Lily's dad saw the young man, he dropped the belt and ran out of the courtyard, as if he was terrified of him.
"Uncle Ethan," the girl in Maya's arms was crying hard.
"Hi, I'm Ethan Gray, the village secretary. If it's convenient, could you come with me to take Lily to the clinic in town? It would be easier since you're a woman," Ethan said gently.
On the way to the town clinic, Maya learned that Ethan's family was from the capital, but his grandfather was from the village.
As a child, Ethan often spent holidays visiting his grandfather here.
Ethan had just graduated when his grandfather passed away. After graduation, he returned and became the youngest village official, determined to develop his grandfather's hometown.
Though young, Ethan showed maturity in how he handled things. His personality seemed gentle but had a stubborn core, and he personally took care of every village matter.
Maya's move here had also been approved by Ethan, but he'd been at a conference in the neighboring village for the past few days, which was why Maya hadn't met him before.
"Miss Maya, next time don't rush into situations like this alone. You could ask Mr. Johnson from next door to come with you. You might get hurt otherwise." Lily had fallen asleep, and Ethan came into the hospital room with a thermos, giving her advice.
Maya nodded. "Got it. I was way too impulsive."
"I know you were worried about Lily." Ethan looked at the sleeping girl with helplessness. "After her mom died and seeing what her dad's like, I tried contacting her other relatives to take her in. Problem is, none of them want her."
Maya looked at Lily's injured face as she slept, unable to control the heartache inside. "Lily's such a sweet kid. How could anyone bear to hurt her?"
She thought of her own daughter, who had also been hurt because of her father. Things she hadn't thought about in a long time came flooding back into her mind—apparently the wounds in her heart had never truly healed.
When Maya came back to herself, tears were already streaming down her face.
Ethan handed her a tissue. Maya looked at him blankly, and Ethan said softly, "You're crying."
Maya touched her cheek and realized—she was crying.
"Sorry, and thank you." Maya took the tissue and wiped the tears from her eyes.
Ethan didn't ask any questions. He casually changed the subject, asking about how Maya was settling into village life. Though he was three years younger than Maya, he seemed like an elder, his every word showing care and concern.
By nightfall, Lily still hadn't woken up and the IV was finished. A light drizzle had started falling outside.
Ethan carried Lily on his back while Maya walked beside them holding an umbrella.
When they got back to the village, Lily's house was locked up and the whole place was dark.
So Maya had Ethan bring Lily to her house instead.
After settling Lily in, Maya was about to walk Ethan out when he waved her off. "Don't worry about me. Go take a shower and change clothes—you're soaked."
Only then did Maya notice that half her body was wet. She laughed and pointed at Ethan. "Your clothes are wet too."
"I'm fine, I'm tough. I'm heading out—get some rest." After saying this, Ethan ran out of the courtyard without looking back.
