It's 2 AM on a Friday and I'm taking my lunch break. Well, technically just a break break, because it's not lunchtime, but it's the first break and the time that I eat on shift, so I'd consider it a lunch break. The resident children are always asleep around the time my night shift begins, so I don't get to see them until breakfast, and then I'm off again. I like the quiet of the hospital in the night, though. It's the most calm it gets.
"I told him he was a dick, and he told me he could show me how good he is with his—so I threw my drink in his face."
I glance up at Halle, my mouth agape and the spoon of rice halting mid air towards my mouth. She shrugs at how visibly appalled I am.
"Where are you finding these super villains?" I ask her, incredulous.
"Tinder, babe."
I shake my head, continue directing the spoon into my mouth. When the automatic doors slide open noisily, I glance up, the spoon still in my mouth. It's never a good sign when someone is entering the children's hospital in the middle of the night.
What I see makes me frown. Not because it's an injured or sick child, but because it looks a little like Luis Pierce is walking towards me. There's a backwards cap on his head, brown hair peeking out the back, and he's wearing a navy Michigan hoodie. Then my eyes fall to the bouquet of sunflowers under his arm, a hot drink cup in one hand and a square white box in the other.
"Hey," he says, and he's right in front of me, grinning.
I stare at him, the spoon still in my mouth when I say, "Hi?"
"I brought you breakfast... a midnight snack?" He shakes his head, frowns as he place them down on the reception desk in front of me. "I don't know. And these."
He holds out the sunflowers and I put my spoon in my lunchbox before taking them. It suddenly feels like I don't know a word of English and my heart is inside my chest cosplaying a gymnast.
"Thank you," I say, still a little disoriented and wondering if I'm delirious after two cups of coffee.
"Go out with me Devyn," Luis voice brings my attention back up to him. "On a date."
I stare at him for longer than socially acceptable, and he just lets me.
"It's 2 AM, Luis," I say eventually.
His lips tilt up. "Not now, this weekend—"
"No, I mean it's 2 AM, and you're standing in front of me."
"I know," he shrugs. And that's it.
"Because...?"
"Because I want you to go out with me," he says simply.
I huff out a laugh in disbelief. "You have my number, Luis."
"So what," He leans down, crosses his arms on the counter. "I was supposed to send you a picture of your hot chocolate?"
"Luis," I look between his eyes, frown. "We can't just go back to how we were."
He doesn't miss a beat. "Yes we can."
"No we can't."
"Why not?" he tilts his head to the side.
And while I try and scour my brain for reasons why, I realise I don't have any.
I shake my head, but I feel myself smiling. "You're insane."
"Only for you. Now, will you go on a date with me?"
"Yeah," I find myself saying.
"Yeah?" his smile widens and I remember his mouth on mine the other night and it sends heat straight to my cheeks.
"Yeah, Pierce."
"I'll pick you up at 2," he straightens, glancing at Halle and offering her a more tame version of the smile he just gave me. "You ladies enjoy your shift."
And then he's gone, and I have a bouquet in my hand and I'm thoroughly confused.
"Was that Luis Pierce?"
I turn to Halle and she's looking at me wide eyed, mouth agape, fanning herself. "To have a man like that bring me coffee and a sweet treat at two in the morning."
I shake my head, turn to stare at the flowers in my hands again. What the fuck.
