"She gave me the number to Mary Sue's fucking Rejection Hotline."
Santi laughs too hard to be considered a friend.
It was stupid of me to think I could just walk back into her life, but in all honesty, I never thought I'd end get the chance to be. She was delivered to me like an incredibly beautiful angel with an attitude and no remorse. I couldn't let her walk out of Sips without a way of contacting her. To my horror, it seems other guys have had that thought too, because she typed in the rejection hotline's number by memory.
I love the idea of her rejecting men. Apart from when the man is me.
"If she doesn't want your lame ass back, would you be mad if I slid in?" Santiago rubs his hands together and grins at me.
I don't respond, focusing all my energy on fantasising about landing a cross hook to his jaw. Then I remember he's my centre on the field, and unfortunately I need him.
"He'd kill you."
I turn around to find Josiah Miller walking into my kitchen, and my murderous thoughts evaporate. I grin at my best friend and stand up to meet him halfway.
"About damn time," I clap him on the back as we hug.
"You thought I'd miss my brother's starting game in his first year as captain?" my friend smiles back at me.
Josiah and I live together back in Michigan, and yet, it feels like months since I last saw him. Between summer training and the busyness of the on season, last year I barely saw him at all.
"Devyn Young, huh?" Jo blows out a breath. "If I had a cigar, I'd tap off the ash and tell you how many years it's been since I've seen that girl."
Santiago makes a face like he's smelt something unpleasant. "She's real bad now bro, trust."
Josiah laughs and I wonder why I'm friends with people that enjoy laughing at my expense. Maybe I should leave Cali and Michigan and move somewhere away from both of these idiots. Colorado, or Rhode Island.
I'm a second away from disowning them when my phone vibrates in my pocket. I pull it out to see an unfamiliar number.
"Luis Pierce speaking," I put on my professional mask as I head over to the front door, leaving my friends to catch up.
"Mm, you sound like you're expecting a call from someone important..."
The voice on the other side of the line is smooth, warm and sweet, and it goes straight to my groin.
"How did you get my number?" I ask, sitting down on the steps of our porch.
"I asked Serena to ask Noah," Devyn tells me.
"So you regretted giving me Mary Sue's number, huh?" I don't even try to stop my smile.
She tuts. "I figured if I wanted NFL game tickets for my brother's birthday, I'd better my have some connections."
"You have Noah," I point out.
"You're right. Bye, Pierce-"
"Hold on!"
I can hear the grin in her voice when she says, "Yes?"
"I have a game on Saturday," I say.
"Almost like it's your job," Devyn's delivers with sarcasm.
"Come." When she's silent for a moment, I add, "To the game."
"Yeah I know where you were asking me to come, Pierce. I was deciding whether I'd like to spend my day off watching men chase each other around on grass."
"And?"
The door clicks open behind me. "Man, I forgot that guy is a doozy—bro told me he only eats boiled chicken and broccoli during the on season." Josiah sits beside me on the step, unaware or purposefully ignoring the phone to my ear.
"Is that... Josiah?" Devyn voice runs over me again.
"Yeah," I frown, "how'd you know?"
"I've only met one person in my life that uses the word doozy," she says it like it physically pains her.
"Is that Devyn Young?" Jo looks up from his phone, speaking loud enough for Dev to hear him but looking at me with wide eyes.
"Hi, Jo,"
I realise that while she sounds incredible, the phones speaker barely does her voice justice. I refrain from telling Josiah this, though.
"So?" I push.
"So...?" she trails off.
"The game," I remind her.
Another beat of silence before she says, "I'll let you know, Pierce. I gotta go to sleep."
"Okay," I try to not sound disappointed.
"Okay." And then she hangs up the phone.
"Sleep?" Josiah pipes up beside me. "It's 3 PM, bro. I think that may have been an excuse."
I slap a hand on the back of his neck and use it as support to stand up. "She's a nurse, dickhead. She works night shift."
"Right," Jo's hand claps satisfyingly with mine when he grabs it for me to pull him to his feet. "I had a woman tell me that once. Turns out she had a husband."
I shoot an incredulous look at my friend over my shoulder as we walk back into the house, genuinely wondering how he made it to adulthood.
"Santi was fucking with you about the chicken. He's eat a burrito right now," I tell Josiah.
When he looks over to see Santiago sat at the kitchen island, seemingly doing the three bite challenge on a burrito, Jo looks genuinely betrayed.
I shake my head, even though I'm smiling and pick up his suitcase to bring it to one of our guest rooms.
Then I head to my room and flop down on my bed.
me: 3 Attachments- CRWS vs Ohio Jets tickets
Devy: i didn't say yes
me: I won't be able to win without you there.
Devy: ...
Devy: that's a lot of pressure, pierce. and a little manipulative.
me: You're right, I'm sorry. The prophecies foretold I'd play a lot better if I knew you were watching, though.
Devy: 🙄
I drop my phone on the bed now, because I want to call her and hear her voice again and talk to her all afternoon, but she needs to leave for her shift in 8 hours.
So instead, I get in the shower and jerk off to the image of her in my head.
