"Bro, as agreed, 20% of the money." The paparazzo squatted before a toilet with Lucas and wired six hundred thousand dollars to Lucas's bank account as agreed.
In a good mood, the paparazzo stuffed one cigarette into his mouth and remarked, "The rich are foolish, so I earn 2.4 million dollars in one night."
He patted Lucas on the shoulder, grinning from ear to ear. "Bro, I look forward to our next cooperation."
Lucas stretched his hand to the paparazzo and said, "Hey, give me a cigarette."
The paparazzo gave Lucas a push. "No cigarettes for minors."
Lucas thought, "He knows the rules..." He then asked, "Do you have a copy?"
The paparazzo shook his head. "No. A deal is a deal. I am a professional. I got all the videos deleted right after I received the money."
This speech disappointed Lucas very much. He pressed, "Any screenshots?"
"I have one here. Give me a sec."
The paparazzo pulled out his phone. Before he found the screenshots for Lucas, there came two glares.
Both Lucas and the paparazzo couldn't help but shield their eyes against the glares with their hands.
"Freeze! We are police officers. We got a report that you are suspected of blackmail."
Lucas and the paparazzo locked eyes in shock.
Lucas slumped to the ground as his knees buckled. He broke out in cold sweat. "No way! No..."
The paparazzo soon came back to his senses. Livid, he cursed, "Dorian, he set me up!"
"Damn! The rich are sly and ruthless. That was why Dorian was cooperative," The paparazzo thought. However, it was too late for him to see the truth.
Because of solid proof, both Lucas and the paparazzo were taken to the police station.
Noah: [Dorian called the police, and Lucas got arrested for blackmail. In the police station, Lucas asked me for help.]
When Noah's message came, Irene just walked out of her bathroom.
With so much money involved, Lucas would be sentenced to jail if Dorian refused to drop the suit.
Irene could make Dorian drop the case, but she didn't want to.
She replied to Noah: [Serve him right.]
Irene wondered about when Ruth would come home. She checked the time, and it was already 11 p.m.
She sent a message to Ruth to see whether the latter was already asleep.
Instantly, she got a video call from Ruth. "Rini, are you still at work? I will go home tomorrow night," Ruth said.
"Not working. I liked to give you a call before going to bed," Irene explained.
She found that Ruth wasn't in the hotel. Frowning, she asked worriedly, "Grandma, it is late. Why are you wandering around?"
Ruth seemed to be in a park, but Irene soon noticed a typical building, which suggested that Ruth might be at a university.
Irene asked with confusion, "Ruth, where are you?"
"In a university. My old friend is here, so I came to see him."
"Can't you go tomorrow? It's late."
Ruth explained, "He is very busy and may get a moment at night. I gotta go now."
Irene had a lot of questions in her mind, but Ruth hung up the phone without hesitation.
Ruth stuffed her phone into her bag, walked into the building, and asked the janitor, "Is Darnell Patterson still working?"
The janitor recognized Ruth who had been there in the afternoon. "It is late. Madam, why are you still here?"
The janitor ushered Ruth to a sofa and let her sit down. He served a cup of coffee to Ruth. "Here you are, Madam."
"Thank you." Ruth politely accepted the coffee.
After Ruth took a sip of coffee, the janitor asked, "Why do you want to see him? For some medicine?"
The janitor had seen a lot of people coming for medicine.
He shook his head and persuaded, "Madam, you had better go home. It costs time and money to develop new medicines. In other words, it is difficult to get them."
Ruth remained calm and explained patiently, "I didn't come for medicine. I would like to do some catching up with Darnell."
Hearing this, the janitor silently looked Ruth up and down.
Ruth wore a linen suit and casually tied her hair with a black rubber band.
To the janitor, Ruth didn't seem to be in the same circle as Darnell.
Who was Darnell? He was the dean of the medical school of Aurelith University and the leader in the area of medicine. He had developed many good medicines for his people.
"Let me be frank, Madam. Mr. Patterson is busy, so I don't think he has the time to see you." The janitor was anxious to get rid of Ruth.
After a moment of thought, Ruth said, "You got a point. My bad."
She left the sofa, picked up her bag, and said, "I will leave now. When you see Darnell, please tell him of my visit."
"My pleasure." The janitor then asked, "What's your name?"
"My surname is Patterson." Ruth added after a pause, "Daniel Patterson." She then left with her bag.
Austin didn't arrive in Viremont City until 8 p.m. After a nap on the plane, he was spirited. Therefore, he went to see his professor.
"Austin, when did you come back?" At the sight of Austin, the janitor showed a flattering smile.
Austin was Darnell's favorite student and would have a bright future.
"Not long ago." Austin pulled out a bag of beef jerky from his bag and handed it to the janitor. "Try it."
The janitor took the jerky, glanced at it, and said with surprise, "Beef jerky? Great. Where did you buy it?" He could tell at one glance that the jerky was homemade.
"My family brought it to me," Austin explained.
In fact, Ruth had deliberately bought the good jerky for Irene as snacks. Irene shared some with her cousins.
After one glance at Ruth in the distance, Austin asked, "Who is that old lady?"
"Oh, she wants to see Mr. Patterson. She came this afternoon, and this is her second visit. I asked whether she came for medicine, and she said no.
"I don't believe her because most visitors come for Mr. Patterson's medicine."
Austin shrugged. "Perhaps she is an old friend of Mr. Patterson. Did she leave a message? I can help pass it on to Mr. Patterson."
"She did. She said that her name is Daniel Patterson, and she wanted me to tell Mr. Patterson about her visit." Speaking, the janitor blinked.
Austin frowned. "What's wrong?"
"Austin, is she Mr. Patterson's relative? They share the same surname," the janitor said.
"Maybe." Austin chuckled and deliberately scared the janitor. "You offended Mr. Patterson's relative. Too bad."
The janitor rubbed his head and said, "Austin, please help pass the word on to Mr. Patterson. I don't want to get myself into trouble."
"Sure thing." Austin entered the elevator and headed down to the basement.
