Austin got changed. He was then allowed into the research center with the help of his pupils and his fingerprint.
The main hall was full of researchers led by Darnell. Austin soon got warm greetings from his peers.
"Austin, you are back," one researcher greeted.
"Austin, Mr. Patterson is Room 3," the other said.
"Thanks." Speaking, Austin headed toward Room 3. From a distance, he saw Darnell observing a beagle in the cage.
75 years old, Darnell was supposed to lead a retired life, but he was still an honorary dean of the medical school and led many important research projects.
Darnell had devoted his entire life to teaching and medicine.
Five minutes had passed when Darnell finally noticed Austin. "Back so soon?" he asked.
"With my cousin around, my mom was tired of me and drove me away," Austin explained.
After a nod, Darnell pointed at the dog in the cage and said, "No. 7 is quite peaceful this time, so our adjustment is right..."
Darnell was developing a drug for patients with hereditary heart disease.
Austin intently heard Darnell out and then said, "I ran into Jeremy during my trip."
"Jeremy?" Darnell chuckled. "Our boss." Jeremy was the biggest investor of the research center.
"There is little I can do for him." Darnell had checked up on Jeremy personally and found his sickness weird.
Jeremy was sick though all his medical reports from medical machines suggested that he was fine. In other words, his case was pretty rare.
Darnell said, "Mr. Tucker is a rare case. Did you ask his opinion about being our study subject?"
Austin responded, "It was too cruel for me to do that."
Darnell clicked his tongue. "Well, I'll ask him myself when I see him. His case will become a classic one." Because Austin still lingered there, Darnell asked, "What else?"
Austin said, "An old lady came to see you."
Darnell waved his hand. "Drive her away. She must come for medicine or treatment."
For the public good, Darnell never wasted his precious time and energy on rare cases.
He once said, "With my medical skills and knowledge, I should save as many people as I can." Therefore, he devoted himself to studying the common causes.
He would like to help as many people as he could instead of some particular one.
That was his creed, but he never made his students or colleagues agree with him.
"She already left, and she left a message to you," Austin explained.
Darnell gave all his attention to the beagle as if he hadn't heard Austin.
Austin went on, "She said that her name was Daniel Patterson."
He was ready to get back to his work since his task had been completed. However, his arm was gripped by Darnell.
"What did you say? What is her name?" Darnell asked in a trembling voice.
Austin looked back at Darnell who seemed thrilled. Confused and worried, he repeated, "Daniel Patterson."
"Daniel Patterson!" Darnell repeated the name to himself. He then shoved Austin aside. Taking off his white coat, he bolted for the exit.
Austin was stunned. He couldn't help but wonder, "Is that old lady really his relative?"
Darnell burst out of the elevator and shouted at the janitor, "Where is she?"
Caught off guard, the janitor was shocked. "Mr. Patterson!" He asked, "Who?"
"The old lady! Daniel Patterson!" Darnell sounded agitated, so the janitor was scared.
The janitor thought, "Too bad! She turns out to be Mr. Patterson's relative."
He quickly pointed at the trees not far away and said hesitantly, "She left from that direction. About ten minutes ago."
Without a word, Darnell ran along the pavement.
The janitor thought, "Mr. Patterson is calm and steady. That old lady must be his family or lover, or he wouldn't lose his cool like this."
Darnell ran to the entrance of the medical school, but there was no sight of Ruth. It had been years since he ran like mad.
Once again, he lost track of the important person in his life. Disappointment drained the strength from his limbs, so he slumped down onto the stairs.
It was very late, so there were few people or cars on campus. Darnell looked bitter when he sat on the stairs alone.
Standing sixteen feet away, Ruth hesitantly called, "Darnell?"
Darnell slowly looked up in the direction of Ruth's voice. He looked at the stranger and opened his mouth. "You..."
Darnell rose to his feet and hesitantly walked to Ruth. At the sight of the scar between her collarbones, he broke down. "Ruth?"
Darnell pointed at Ruth's scar with a trembling finger and sobbed, "I know this scar. It was left by the hot noodles."
Ruth nodded with tears in her eyes. "You were too little to hold the bowl firmly, so several noodles fell onto my neck. Back then, my skin was delicate, so the scar was left."
Back then, Ruth was only nine years old, and Darnell just six. "Darnell, do you still remember that?" Ruth asked.
Darnell nodded vigorously. "I do. Dad was very mad and gave me a good beating."
Ruth couldn't help but chuckle. Then, her eyes turned red. Gazing at the old man before her, she couldn't recall the face of her little brother.
In the blink of an eye, her little brother had become an old man. "Darnell, time made a mark on you."
Hearing this, Darnell embraced Ruth and burst into tears. "Ruth, you finally found me. Ruth, I have been waiting for you."
"I'm sorry, Darnell," Ruth sobbed.
The Patterson family had worked in the field of medicine for generations, and there had been some outstanding doctors.
When Ruth was little, her father ran a clinic to provide for his family.
Sadly, the good times didn't last. Daniel was framed by his rivals that he had killed a patient. As a result, he was sentenced to jail.
Before Daniel went to jail, he gave the ten-year-old Ruth some precious medical books and told her to find shelter from a distant relative in Draymont City.
As for the 7-year-old Darnell, Daniel entrusted him to the care of a friend from Kland.
Later, Darnell became the godson of Daniel's friend and was taken to Kland to study medicine. In this way, Ruth and Darnell were separated from each other.
Years later, Daniel regained his freedom. He went to Draymont City and successfully reunited with Ruth. Unfortunately, both of them lost contact with Darnell.
A few days ago, Ruth visited the priest of Byress Church and asked for his help.
The priest of Byress Church and Ruth were childhood sweethearts, and Daniel had saved him once.
For old time's sake, the priest performed a divination for Ruth. He then said that Darnell was still alive and that Darnell lived in Viremont City.
Coincidentally, the priest knew Darnell, so he told Ruth to try her luck in the medical school of Aurelith University.
After 68 years of separation, Ruth and Darnell finally reunited with each other.
