"Grandma, you may ask Grandpa when he will have the time for a gathering, and I will be cooperative." Irene respected scientific researchers very much.
Ruth said, "I'll call him now." Right before Irene, Ruth called Darnell and discussed the coming gathering.
"Bliss will go to Eldraeth City this Tuesday. What do you think of a dinner in Eldraeth City this Saturday?" Darnell asked.
"Great! Well, where do you want to dine? A restaurant or Rini's place?" Ruth asked.
"Is it okay with Rini if we dine at her place? Bliss has a social phobia, so she will be ill at ease in the restaurant," Darnell explained.
Ruth had turned on the speaker, so Irene heard Darnell and said without hesitation, "It is settled then. Come to my place. Grandma and I will do the cooking."
"Sounds good," Darnell replied. In a short time, the three people got the gathering settled.
Ruth started unpacking her luggage. Irene gave her grandma a hand.
Ruth took several things out of her bag after the others were put away.
"Rini, this is the love charm for you." Ruth handed one thing to Irene.
Irene casually glanced at the charm and made no comments. In the past, she didn't believe stuff like this, and her attitude changed after all the misfortune. She quietly took the charm over.
Ruth then gave Irene the other things. "This is the cross you ask for your friend, and this is your lucky necklace."
"Thank you, Grandma," Irene said.
Ruth added, "The priest of Byress Church gave his blessings to these things, so they will help you and your friend."
Hearing this, Irene didn't question Ruth as before.
With doubt, she asked, "Grandma, do you really know the priest of Byress Church?"
"Of course. His name is Colin Kirk. When he was ten years old, my father saved him and took him in for half a month. His blessings are precious, and many rich and powerful people can't get any from him."
Irene nodded solemnly. She then put the lucky necklace, the love charm, and the cross in her bag. She would take the cross to Jeremy when she had time.
It was noon the next day, and Irene didn't have lunch. She bought a fruit basket from a high-end supermarket and then drove to see Mike in the hospital.
As Dorian's girlfriend, she felt it necessary to do her job.
Mike was out of danger and now stayed in the ward.
All his relatives had dispersed, and only Lily and the caregiver stayed there to look after him.
When Irene arrived, a nurse left Mike's ward with the blood pressure equipment. At the sight of Irene, the nurse politely asked, "Hi, what can I do for you?"
Hearing the question, Lily popped up before Irene opened her mouth.
Lily asked, "Miss Jackson, did you come to see my dad?"
Since Lily knew Irene, the nurse left to work after a nod at Irene.
Irene looked into the room and saw the caregiver adjusting the pillow for Mike. She asked, "Ms. Barnes, how is Mr. Barnes?"
Lily suddenly slammed the door shut behind her.
With her arms crossed, she stood guard at the doorway and said, "My dad just fell asleep, so I won't invite you in. Miss Jackson, come at night if you like."
She didn't like the Jackson family because the public insult from Austin not long ago.
"Miss Jackson, you must be busy, so goodbye. On behalf of my dad, I will take your fruit basket and thank you." Speaking, Lily reached for the fruit basket.
Irene deftly stepped back with the fruit basket to dodge Lily's hand. She then took the fruit basket to the nurses.
Right before Lily, Irene said to the nurses. "Hi, everyone, I am Irene. Thanks for helping Mr. Barnes who suffered an attack of illness. I bought you some fruit. Help yourselves."
The nurses were pleasantly surprised. They accepted the fruits as well as Irene's kindness. "Thank you, Miss Jackson."
Then, Irene turned to leave. Lily soon caught up with Irene after she came back to her senses. Irene was shoved toward the wall.
No sooner had Irene steadied herself than Lily shoved her again. Lily barked, "Irene, you deliberately insulted me, didn't you? You brought the fruit basket over for the patient, but you gave it to the nurses.
"It is said that your parents abandoned you and that you were raised by an old woman in the countryside. You are ill-bred. I don't know what Dorian sees in you."
Lily's eyes contemptuously swept over Irene. "You have nothing to recommend yourself but your youth and appearance," Lily said.
"You make me laugh, Ms. Barnes." Irene moved Lily's hand away from her shoulder. With a gentle smile, she said, "I have strength, besides my youth and good appearance."
Then, she gave Lily's belly a hard punch. Instantly, Lily staggered backward.
She lost her balance and fell to the floor. Her left hand hit the floor first, so her wrist was probably dislocated. The sharp pain made her gasp.
Like an irritated lioness, she sprang to her feet and raised her right hand to slap Irene in the face.
"Bitch! How dare you push me! I am Miss Barnes, your future sister-in-law. How dare you..." Lily yelled.
Irene effortlessly caught Lily's right hand in the air. She pulled it backward and said, "Am I a pushover in your eyes?"
Lily's face contorted in pain. "Ouch! Irene, I will send you to jail if you break my hand?"
"Send me to jail?" Irene chuckled as she was amused by Lily's threat. She gave Lily a break but didn't let go of Lily's hand.
She leaned over and whispered in Lily's ear, "Yes, Shelby abandoned me. Have you heard that I sent her to jail personally? I sent my mom to jail, so do you really think that your threat could work on me?"
Lily was aghast. She heard of Shelby's arrest but was ignorant of the person behind it. "What a lunatic!" she thought.
She forced herself to calm down. "Irene, don't forget yourself. Dorian will dump you if he learns the truth. You are so unruly before you marry into the Barnes family."
"Will he?" Irene chuckled. "Let me show you how much Dorian loves me." She let go of Lily, rang Dorian, and turned on the speaker.
Irene spoke as calmly as she could after Dorian answered the call. "Dorian, I slept at 2 a.m. and made use of my lunch break to visit your father in the hospital.
"Mr. Barnes is awake, but Ms. Barnes refused to let me in and told me to come at night. I gave the nurses the fruit basket, which had been bought for your dad, to express my gratitude for their help.
"However, Ms. Barnes humiliated me in return. She called me an unwanted child, insulted my grandma, and complained of my manners. She said that I seduced you with my youth and good appearance."
She began to sob as indignation got her. On the other end of the line, Dorian was gradually irritated.
Irene added with rage, "For the first time in my life, I saw how a woman insulted her little brother like this.
"In my eyes, Dorian, you're an intelligent man of good judgment. However, in the mouth of your elder sister, you are a useless womanizer and weakling."
