"Sophistry!" Lily thought. Agitated, she stomped her foot in frustration and explained to Dorian over the phone, "Dorian, Irene is a liar. She's trying to drive a wedge between us!"
She tried to humiliate Irene, but Irene turned her against Dorian.
Lily and Dorian were half-siblings. It was certain that Dorian would soon become the head of the Barnes family.
To continue her affluent life, Lily had to rely on the Barnes family. Therefore, she couldn't afford to offend Dorian.
Hearing Lily, Irene remained calm. Holding her phone, she confronted Lily right before Dorian. "You call me a liar. Let me ask you, didn't you say those things?"
Lily responded, "I did, but I was talking about you..."
Irene turned to Dorian and said, "See? She admitted it herself. People know that I am your girlfriend. She calls me a bimbo, but I am a graduate of a prestigious university and run my own business.
"Even if I were a bimbo, I am your girlfriend, Dorian. As your elder sister, she insulted your girlfriend in public. Doesn't it suggest that she looks down upon you, Dorian?"
Irene's argument was reasonable and logical, and Lily didn't know what to say.
As silence pervaded, Lily knew that Dorian already bought the story. She hated Irene.
Compared to the restless Lily, Irene seemed rather calm.
Irene added, "I feel sorry for you, Dorian. I bickered with Ms. Barnes, and she threatened that you would dump me. Let me ask you, Dorian, will you dump me if I offend your elder sister for your sake?"
Lily felt speechless. Deep down, she couldn't help but envy Irene for such a glib tongue.
Irene didn't make things up, but her misinterpretation succeeded in convicting Lily right before Dorian. Lily became the bad woman, and Irene was the best girlfriend who spoke up for Dorian.
In comparison, Lily was far inferior to Irene in sophistry.
"Irene," Dorian said solemnly, "Lily and I are half-siblings. Her mother is the late Mrs. Barnes, and I am a good-for-nothing born by my dad's second wife. She looks down upon me, and I know that.
"I am sorry to get you implicated. Tonight, I will pick you up at your studio and take you to visit my dad. As for dumping you..."
After a pause, Dorian continued dismissively, "I am different from Lily. To be with a hunk, she ruthlessly set her husband up, divorced him, and left him nothing.
"I am not that heartless. I would rather disappoint the whole world than sadden the people who love me."
Lily's face went deathly pale in an instant. Irene hung up the phone and meaningfully smiled at Lily.
"Ms. Barnes, I don't care what you think of Dorian. It is certain that he will become the head of the Barnes family soon. You are Miss Barnes, but so what?" Irene said.
She smugly waved her phone to irritate Lily. "I will be Mrs. Barnes after I marry Dorian.
"Every penny you and your daughter spend will need my permission because Dorian loves me, my young body, and my pretty face."
Lily was utterly dumbfounded. "How shameless she is!" she thought.
"Oh, one more thing." Then, Irene whispered to Lily's ear, "I will kick you and your daughter out of the Barnes family when the time is ripe. Your daughter bullied my family, didn't she?
"You have yourself to blame now. I am not those graceful ladies Dorian once liked." Then, Irene headed to the elevator.
The moment she was alone in the elevator, smugness and defiance disappeared from her face.
It was part of her plan to irritate Lily and drive a wedge between Dorian and Lily.
"I already tipped Lily, and let me see what she can do," Irene thought.
Lily massaged her aching wrist while staring at the tightly shut elevator doors. Rage and hatred were burning in her eyes.
She thought, "Screw you, Irene! How dare you mess with me! I will be doomed if she marries into the Barnes family. Compared to Irene, Dorian's ex-girlfriend is lovely."
Then, her eyes lit up. "Didn't Dorian love Amaris dearly? For Amaris, he argued with Dad in public. That is why Dad and I didn't like Amaris," she thought.
Amaris's father had been a private tutor of the Barnes family. Fifteen years ago, he died from a heart attack in the Barnes'. Out of kindness, Mike took Amaris in.
However, the ambitious Amaris coveted the title of Mrs. Barnes and spared no effort to seduce Dorian.
Mike didn't agree with this relationship and sent Amaris abroad. In this way, a great relationship ended with sadness.
Back then, Dorian was too young to go against his father, so he had to break up with Amaris.
Now, Mike was sick, and Dorian gradually took over the family business. Wouldn't Dorian be swayed if his childhood sweetheart were back?
Wasn't it said that people always craved things they could never have? Lily quickly made up her mind and texted Ruby.
Lily: [Send me Amaris's WhatsApp.]
She would instigate Amaris to come home, rekindle the old affair with Dorian, and ruin Irene's plan
"Without Dorian's love, Irene would be at my mercy," Lily thought.
Irene went to the parking lot. Before she got in her car, she noticed a white Land Rover diagonally across from her car.
"Jeremy?" she thought. With curiosity, she walked over and looked into the car.
There was nobody in the car. Frowning, Irene turned around, and the tip of her nose instantly hit a hard jaw.
"Ouch!" She covered her nose. She didn't rub her nose because she hated ruining her makeup.
"What are you doing here?" With one hand in his pocket, Jeremy held his old Thermos cup with the other one and gazed at Irene with a half smile.
Tearful, Irene glared at Jeremy and complained, "Are you a cat? You should feel grateful that my nose is real, or you will have to pay the medical bills for its reconstructive surgery."
As Jeremy narrowed his eyes, Irene's heart tightened. "Jeremy, I..." Irene murmured.
"Did you have lunch?" Jeremy pinched the space between his eyebrows. His voice was low because he was in a bad mood. "Because of the checkups, I lost my appetite. Any recommendations?"
Instantly, Aiden had confusion on his face. "Didn't the doctor tell Mr. Tucker to fast for one hour?" he thought.
