While Amaris was enjoying a spa session at the beauty salon, her phone suddenly buzzed with a WhatsApp notification.
She glanced down, it was a message from someone.
[Hello, Ms. Sullivan. This is Lily Barnes.]
"Lily Barnes? Dorian's eldest sister?" Amaris felt her heart skip a beat.
Without thinking, she intended to reply it.
Before she could send it, Lily sent another message.
Pretending to be the caring big sister, she first asked how Amaris had been these past few years, then casually pried into her love life.
Finally, with deliberate exaggeration, she told Amaris all about how Dorian had been fiercely protective of Irene.
Finally, Lily sighed with feigned sentiment. [The last time I saw Dorian throw everything aside for love was when he was 21. Who would have thought, after all these years, he'd finally found his soulmate.]
[But this time, with Dad growing old and Dorian having come into his own, he'll surely be able to protect the one he loves, no matter what.]
Amaris knew Lily was baiting her on purpose.
Yet she still couldn't help but take the bait.
Amaris replied, [Ms. Barnes, why are you telling me this? Dorian and I broke up years ago. I'm engaged now.]
She added, [Who Dorian ends up with is none of my business.]
Seeing Amaris's reply, Lily gritted her teeth.
'Has this woman really moved on from Dorian?' Lily fumed inwardly.
Still unconvinced, she messaged again. [Dorian seems to be getting married. You just popped into my mind, so I thought I'd say hi. That's all. Nothing more.]
Amaris thought, 'Dorian's getting married? To Irene?'
Dorian never mentioned getting married to Irene.
Waves of turmoil crashed through Amaris, her blood boiling with fierce jealousy and rage.
'No way! Dorian can only be mine! He must never marry Irene! There are a million ways to win Irene's trust. I'll definitely find another way.' Amaris thought, refusing to back down.
At the hospital.
Dorian brought Irene to visit his father.
Lily looked up at the two of them, and her gaze was instantly drawn to the brand-new Hermès diamond-encrusted Birkin bag in Irene's hand, the alluring scent of its new leather still lingering in the air.
Lily thought bitterly, 'Dorian's really head over heels for Irene.'
Lily had been racking her brains for something to provoke Amaris, and now, the perfect opportunity had just fallen right into her lap.
Stealthily pulling out her phone, she snapped a photo of Irene standing beside Dorian, chatting with Mike, with a designer bag in hand.
She sent the photo to Amaris, adding, [Dorian and Irene just stopped by to visit our father. We'll talk later.]
When Amaris saw the photo, what struck her most wasn't the Birkin bag. It was how Dorian was tightly holding Irene's hand and gazing at her adoringly.
Amaris realized she'd never actually seen how Dorian and Irene interacted in person.
In fact, she'd only met Irene a handful of times.
Everything she knew about Irene came solely from Dorian's accounts.
Every time Dorian mentioned Irene, it was with a tone of disdain and contempt.
So, she truly believed that he looked down on that naive, sweet girl.
But...
Dorians gaze toward Irene showed no trace of disdain or impatience. It was clearly filled with affection and tenderness.
Back when Dorian and Amaris first fell in love, the way he looked at her was exactly the same as the way he looked at Irene now.
Amaris realized Dorian already had a place for Irene in his heart.
The moment she understood this, it felt like a knife twisting in her chest.
"Miss Sullivan, please have some honey lemon water," the staff member said, offering her a glass.
Amaris took a sip of the sweet and sour drink, but her heart was filled with a dull, aching bitterness.
Amaris thought to herself, 'Dorian, have you really stopped loving me?'
Distracted throughout her spa session, Amaris mechanically left the beauty salon and slid into her car. Out of habit, she began absentmindedly scrolling through her phone, only to see a Facebook notification that Irene had posted an update an hour ago.
Amaris had set Irene as a favorite on Twitter.
Whenever Irene posted anything, the app would notify her immediately.
