Dorian calmly rubbed his father's chest to soothe him. Once he had settled down, Dorian gently helped him take a sip of warm water.
"Dad, no matter how you justify it, our ancestors were in the wrong when it came to taking over the Tucker family's business."
"There's nothing shameful about admitting our ancestors were wrong," he said. "The real disgrace is knowing full well they were wrong yet refusing to admit it and still trying to whitewash history."
"I think the reason the Tuckers hate the Barnes family so much is precisely because we stubbornly refuse to admit our mistakes. How is that any different from what the colonizer militarists did back then?"
Mike fell silent.
He studied Dorian, his gaze searching and filled with complex emotions.
This child was half Tucker family by blood. He would never fully belong to the Barnes family.
"The feud between the Barnes and Tucker families? That tangled mess will never be sorted out," Mike scoffed. "And don't go thinking the Tuckers are any better than us."
"Your mother and I were truly in love, but they maliciously slandered me, claiming I married her just to wipe out the Tucker family's legacy!"
"I've had to shoulder all this blame, and I've accepted it because I was utterly devoted to your mother. When I made up my mind to be with her, I was already prepared for the worst."
Mike snapped, "And what did the Tuckers do? And what did your lunatic grandmother do?"
Dorian said calmly, "She and Grandpa refused to bless your union, and even risked a high-risk pregnancy at her age just to give birth to Uncle Jeremy."
"Dad, I've heard this a thousand times already, and repeating it is pointless," Dorian said, impatience creeping into his voice.
Dorian was honestly sick of hearing about these same old grudges.
"But that's not all."
Mike let out a bitter, pained laugh and roared in anguish, "Your grandmother was so desperate to stop your mother from bearing a Barnes heir that she planted someone in the hospital! When your mother went in for her prenatal checkup, they shoved her down the stairs!"
"You were born at just seven months, and your mother barely survived the traumatic delivery to bring your fragile, premature body into this world. She only had time for one fleeting look at you before the amniotic fluid embolism took her."
"And that heartless grandmother of yours deliberately arranged to have the hospital's top obstetrician transferred before your mother went into labor. Because of that, your mother's treatment was delayed, and she died right there on the delivery bed!"
Mike's eyes welled up with furious tears.
Tears and snot streaked down his face as Mike choked out, "Dorian, I never had the heart to tell you all this before. After all, the Tuckers are your mother's family, and they're your other home."
"Back then, I thought if I just kept my head down and endured, your grandmother would finally leave us in peace. But who could've guessed? When she found out you'd aced your senior year exams, she got scared that your intelligence would one day threaten her precious Jeremy in the business world, so she actually hired someone to have you killed!"
Mike glared and spat out, "Your kidnapping was orchestrated by that crazy old woman!"
Dorian's face drained of color in shock.
"Is... is this all true?" His eyes widened with disbelief. "Did Grandma really cause Mom's death, and arrange for me to be kidnapped when I was eighteen?"
She was a quiet old woman, and he found it hard to believe she was truly capable of doing all those things.
"You don't believe me?"
Seeing that Dorian still doubted his words, Mike was deeply disappointed. "Dorian, I'm your father! I'm far closer to you than Jeremy or that madwoman could ever be!"
"You're my own son! Why would I lie to you about something this serious?"
"If you don't believe me, go confront Jeremy directly! Ask him point-blank if that madwoman was behind your kidnapping during your senior year!"
"Ask him if he knew the truth all along. Is that why he secretly arranged protection for you later?"
By now, Dorian had to admit he was starting to believe most of what his father said, though a part of him still resisted.
