After putting her phone down, Irene took a long drink of water, finally calming the nausea in her stomach.
Meanwhile, Dorian had just cleared security and was heading to board his flight when her message came through.
The moment he saw her call him Dorian, a slow, amused smile tugged at his lips. Dorian: [Say it out loud for me.]
Irene saw the message and smirked. As if she'd give him the satisfaction that easily.
Irene: [Wait until your birthday. I'll say it to your face.]
Once she had him hooked, she tossed her phone aside and got back to work.
Dorian sent a few more messages, but when none got a reply, he knew exactly what was going on. She was doing it on purpose—teasing him, keeping him waiting.
And honestly, it worked. He found himself looking forward to three days from now more than he expected.
Half an hour later, Dorian's flight soared into the clouds, en route to Halverra City. Back in the office, Irene logged onto Facebook to post her second update of the day.
4:00 PM.
The plane touched down at Halverra City International Airport.
As soon as Dorian stepped out of the VIP arrival gate, his phone rang.
An unfamiliar number flashed across the screen—no contact name, but the area code was local.
He glanced at the digits and immediately smiled. He knew this number by heart.
"Amaris," he answered, his voice soft and indulgent.
"Dorian," Amaris' delicate voice came through the line. "Did you just land? I made dinner—I've been waiting to eat with you."
"I just got to the airport," he said. "Should be at your place in about forty minutes. You cooked? What about Kimberly?"
"I gave her the night off," Amaris replied sweetly.
"Dorian, it's been so long since we've seen each other. I just wanted to have you all to myself."
Dorian had always had a soft spot for her.
And truthfully, after spending so much time focused on Irene lately, he did feel a little guilty for neglecting Amaris.
"Amaris," he said gently, "the next three days are all yours."
"Okay, Dorian. I'll be waiting."
But after the call ended, the smile on Amaris' porcelain face vanished completely.
She backed out of her contacts and opened Facebook.
Her feed was still stuck on Irene's profile.
Irene had posted twice today.
The first post had three images: the first two showed a stunning bouquet of black roses; the third was a close-up of a pair of rose-shaped diamond tassel earrings.
The second post was a cropped screenshot of a chat conversation—both avatars were cut off, leaving just the exchange.
Message 1: [Thanks for the roses, Dorian. Love you.]
Reply: [Say it out loud for me.]
Message 2: [Wait until your birthday. I'll say it to your face.]
Amaris didn't need to guess who the man was.
Irene had never been one to flaunt her love life—not even in private circles. That was why Amaris had never imagined that things between her and Dorian were this... intimate. This flirtatious.
Whenever Dorian spoke of Irene in front of her, it was always with a dismissive, irritated tone. He made it sound like she was just someone he had to deal with, someone annoying. So Amaris had believed him.
But now—those lavish roses, the extravagant earrings, and that flirtatious chat—had cracked something inside her.
She could see it clearly now: In what was supposed to be a calculated setup, Dorian was clearly enjoying himself.
Amaris still believed that Dorian loved her.
She still believed he got close to Irene to gain her trust—so he could help Amaris get the healthy heart she so desperately needed.
After all, she was his salvation—the one irreplaceable person in his life.
But...
Irene was breathtaking.
Even as a woman, Amaris couldn't find a single flaw in her.
And with someone like that around him every single day, how could Dorian not be tempted? The doubt hit her hard—and it hit all at once.
Her mind was a mess.
