Fifty minutes later, Dorian arrived at Amaris' doorstep, suitcase in hand.
The moment he walked through the door, he pulled her into a tight embrace. As he felt how much thinner she'd gotten, his heart ached. "You've lost weight again," he said softly.
"I haven't had much of an appetite lately," Amaris replied. "And I haven't been sleeping well either."
She slipped out of his arms, twirled lightly by the hem of her dress, then looked up at him with a playful smile. "Now that I've lost some weight, do I still look good?"
She was already twenty-five, yet she still looked like a girl of seventeen or eighteen—untouched, pure, almost ethereal.
Her eyes were clear and wide, like a doe's—innocent and untainted. It was hard to believe anything dark could exist inside her.
Dorian felt his heart soften completely. "To me, Amaris," he said tenderly, "you're the most beautiful woman in the world."
Reassured, Amaris pouted, feigning jealousy. "What about Irene? She's beautiful too. What is she, then?"
"Why bring her up?" Dorian's expression shifted immediately, a flicker of annoyance in his eyes. He let out a soft, mocking laugh. "She's like a little lapdog—throw her a bone, and she wags her tail like crazy.
"You're the snow on a mountaintop. Comparing her to you only drags you down."
Amaris felt deeply satisfied by his words, but still gave a gentle protest. "She may be annoying, but at least she genuinely cares about you. Isn't that a bit cruel, saying things like that?"
"What's cruel about it?" Dorian picked her up and carried her into the living room, gently laying her down on the sofa. "It's been a while. Are you hungry?"
She nodded toward the kitchen, wrapping her arms around his neck. "There's still soup on the stove."
"No rush," he said, lips brushing her skin. "Let me feed you something else first…"
His hands moved under her dress, slowly undressing her. As he stared at her smooth, pale skin, something crossed his mind. "Where's your fiancé?" he asked suddenly.
Amaris rolled her eyes at him. "What fiancé? Kevin? He's the bodyguard you assigned me. You were coming over—of course he left. He knows the drill."
Dorian chuckled, then loosened his tie and leaned in, taking his time savoring her.
By the time they were finished, the food had long gone cold.
Dorian stood in the kitchen reheating dinner, apron tied around his waist.
Amaris padded in barefoot, wearing only his shirt. She wrapped her arms around his waist from behind.
A dazzling 20-carat amethyst necklace sparkled at her throat.
"Dorian," she said sweetly, "thank you for the necklace."
Irene had only gotten a pair of rose gold earrings. But she? She got a 20-carat gem.
There was no question where Dorian's priorities lay.
He turned off the burner, leaned back against the counter, and slipped an arm around her slim waist.
Gazing down at her delicate, porcelain features, he gently kissed her forehead. "Amaris," he said, "back when you carried me out of Mount Cloud on that tiny frame of yours… that's when I knew. You're the only one I'd ever marry."
"You deserve everything good in this world."
Dorian had once suffered from severe night blindness.
During their senior year of high school, the school had sent them on a two-week survival training trip in Mount Cloud.
It was during that trip that he was kidnapped—dumped deep in the mountains and left to fend for himself.
The temperature swings were brutal. He'd been bitten by a venomous snake and had slipped into hypothermia.
Just when he thought he was done for, Amaris had come for him—like a miracle out of nowhere. She had risked poisoning herself to suck out the venom, then scoured the forest for herbs to fight the toxins.
