But even that one slightly clumsy "Dorian" sent a jolt straight through Dorian.
His throat tightened, and his gaze on Irene darkened, suddenly intense.
"Say it again," he said, voice husky.
Irene shook her head, huffing in a mock-defiant tone, "No way. You stood me up last night—you don't get to act all sweet now and pretend nothing happened."
Dorian gave a soft laugh. He was a little disappointed, but that one Dorian from earlier was already enough to keep him replaying it in his mind for days.
Then he finally leaned down, blew out the candles, and took a bite of cake.
To be honest, it wasn't great—pretty average, really. But somehow, he still ended up eating a whole slice.
When he realized how much he'd eaten, even he was a little surprised.
"Oh, by the way—are you free tonight?" he asked suddenly.
Irene assumed he was trying to make dinner plans with her and was about to find a polite excuse when she heard him continue. "My birthday is also the anniversary of my mother's passing. Every year, I go with my uncle to visit her grave. We always have dinner together afterward.
"I couldn't make it yesterday because of work, so we rescheduled for tonight."
Dorian was closest to his uncle, Jeremy.
"You already know how much he's done for me, and how much he believes in me. He's been a mentor, a role model—not just in life, but in business too.
"His health hasn't been great lately. Irene, I'd really like you to come with me tonight. I want him to meet the woman I hope will be part of our family—someone he can be proud of."
It was clear from his tone—Dorian held nothing but deep respect and admiration for Jeremy.
Irene had been about to say no—but the moment he said that, her attitude shifted completely. "Of course I'm free!" she replied without hesitation.
"I'll come pick you up later," he said.
"Sounds good."
After Dorian left, Irene snapped a photo of the cake, then another of her burned arm and the StellaLou plush he had won for her.
She posted the photos on Facebook with a short caption: [First time baking a cake—burned a few, burned myself, too. But at least someone was nice enough to eat a whole slice.]
Amaris had Irene's account on notification.
The second she saw the post, her expression froze.
Just yesterday morning, she'd baked a cake for Dorian too. He'd taken a few polite bites—then set it aside and never touched it again.
But Irene's cake? Lumpy, ugly, and probably dry as cardboard—yet he'd eaten a third of it.
That familiar pang of jealousy twisted in her chest again.
By just after four o'clock, Irene had already left work and rushed home. After getting ready, it was nearly five-thirty.
Dinner with Jeremy was technically a family meal. She couldn't overdress and look showy, but she also couldn't afford to look careless or underdressed.
She settled on a delicate blush-pink suit, pulled her long hair into a neat ponytail, and went with a soft, smoky makeup look—elegant, refined, but not overdone.
When Ruth saw how graceful and polished she looked, she couldn't help but ask, "You look amazing. Hot date? Or are you heading to the Barnes family?"
"Dorian's taking me to dinner with his uncle," Irene replied. Then she added, "Grandma, remember that calming essential oil blend I asked you to make? Is it ready?"
"It's been ready for a while—I just kept forgetting to give it to you," Ruth said, heading back to her room. She returned with a small fabric pouch in hand.
She passed it to Irene and explained, "I made this specifically for Mr. Tucker's condition. Have him try it out for a few days and see if it helps. If it works, he can make his own batch using the formula I wrote down."
"These herbs weren't cheap, you know," she muttered.
Irene opened the note and skimmed the recipe. After a quick glance, she smiled and said, "Perfect. Thank you!"
