With the Tucker family line seemingly cut off and Rhett aging and gravely ill, the Barnes family seized the opportunity. They began aggressively acquiring Tucker family assets in a ruthless act of revenge, ultimately rising to become the dominant business empire in Eldraeth City.
Then, in 1950, something shocking happened—Rhett's youngest son, Jeffrey Tucker, returned to Eldraeth City after more than two decades.
Only then did people realize he hadn't gone missing—he had gone undercover, joining the army under an assumed identity.
When Jeffrey came back and saw the shattered remnants of his family's legacy, he made a vow: the Barnes family would never rise again. Not in his lifetime, not in generations to come.
And from that moment on, the Barnes and Tucker families became bitter enemies.
After several economic reforms, the Tucker family entered the business world. Jeffrey and his son, Thomas Tucker, became some of the earliest self-made entrepreneurs in the country.
Meanwhile, the Barnes family, burdened by their past and the stigma attached to it, faced repeated setbacks. No matter what they did, they could never quite catch up to the Tucker family.
Before his death, Jeffrey called Thomas and Thomas's wife to his bedside and gave them one final command.
"No child of the Tucker family is ever to marry into the Barnes family. Anyone who does will be removed from the family and stripped of the Tucker name."
Thomas and his wife had always respected this final wish. They kept a strict distance from the Barnes family.
But their only daughter, Sylvie Barnes, defied it. She fell in love with Mike—Dorian's father.
Everyone knew exactly why Mike approached her. His motives were so transparent it was practically common knowledge.
But Sylvie, blinded by love, believed that the sins of their ancestors shouldn't be passed on to their children. She was determined to marry him.
To force her parents to agree, she took things to the extreme. She slept with Mike before the wedding and even staged a scene—arranging for someone to "accidentally" walk in on them, hoping public pressure would force her parents to give in.
But Thomas and his wife were resolute.
Not only did they refuse to be manipulated, they went even further—on the day of her wedding, they publicly disowned her and removed her from the family.
Fearing their family assets might fall into enemy hands, the couple—both already in their forties—made the bold decision to have another child.
That second child was a boy: Jeremy.
Thinking of all this, Irene glanced over and asked Dorian, "What's your dad's relationship like with your uncle?"
Dorian's expression darkened. He didn't answer.
That said enough. Clearly, Mike and Jeremy had a strained, if not outright hostile, relationship. And Dorian—caught in the middle—probably had a rough time navigating both sides.
Irene didn't press him further.
When they arrived at the cemetery, Dorian took Irene's hand and led her to his mother's grave.
The photo on the headstone was yellowed with age. But even through the faded black-and-white image, Irene could see the elegance and beauty Sylvie had once possessed.
She really did look a lot like her younger brother, Jeremy.
In front of the grave stood two bouquets—white chrysanthemums on the left, white magnolias on the right.
Irene had a hunch the magnolias were from Jeremy.
There were, after all, three magnolia trees planted in the courtyard of the Tucker family.
Dorian gently placed his own bouquet down and, still holding Irene's hand, began speaking to the headstone softly. "Mom, let me introduce someone. This is the incredible girl I chose after searching high and low. Her name's Irene—she's a top student in the architecture program at Aurelith University.
"Please, if you're watching over us, bless her with good health."
He'd said something almost identical in his previous life.
Back then, Irene had been deeply moved.
Now…
She stared at Sylvie's photo with a sweet, almost angelic smile. Her tone was cheerful, even affectionate. "Ms. Tucker, I hope you'll bless me with good fortune. May all my wishes come true!"
'No hidden agenda—just one simple dream: To ruin your son's life,' she thought.
