When Jeremy didn't reply, Aiden snuck a glance at him—only to see a look on his face that was hard to read, a mix of disbelief, frustration, and something else altogether. Now Aiden wasn't sure anymore. He wondered, 'Have I just completely misunderstood everything?'
"Sir?" Aiden asked, unsure. "Did I say something wrong?"
Jeremy shot him a cold glance. "Didn't realize you had a talent for bad jokes."
Only then did Aiden realize he'd completely misread the situation. "Wait—you're not… interested in Miss Jackson like that?"
Jeremy rubbed his forehead, exasperated. "When did I ever say I had any inappropriate thoughts about her?"
Irene was twenty-five—eight years younger than him. That kind of age gap wasn't just about numbers; it came with a generational divide too.
Besides, he wasn't that desperate—not enough to go after Dorian's girlfriend.
Aiden finally relaxed, letting go of the absurd scenario he'd imagined. Trying to keep things neutral, he said, "Miss Jackson is an outstanding young woman. From what I can tell, her feelings for Mr. Barnes are genuine."
Jeremy didn't respond, but his silence felt heavy.
"Oh, right—Mr. Tucker," Aiden added, remembering, "I sent a photo of that aromatherapy oil to the head physician at the Traditional Medicine Clinic. He got back to me."
"What'd he say?" Jeremy asked, his tone flat.
"He said the aromatherapy oil contains 23 different herbs. Eighteen of them are commonly used in calming aromatherapy blends.
"But the other five? They're rare. Not typically used in sachets," Aiden hesitated, then added, "In fact… they're technically toxic."
Jeremy's gaze sharpened. "So it's poisonous?"
"No—definitely not!" Aiden quickly waved his hands, clarifying, "The head physician explained that even common medicinal herbs carry some toxicity. Those eighteen calming herbs alone can cause strong side effects if not balanced properly.
"But surprisingly, it's those so-called 'toxic' herbs that neutralize the side effects. Together, they form a perfectly balanced formula. It's actually brilliant.
"He even said the person who came up with it must be a genius—and he'd love to meet them."
"Is that so?" Jeremy hadn't expected the sachet Irene brought to earn such high praise.
He thought, 'It seems her seemingly ordinary grandmother, tucked away in some quiet rural village, is far more capable than she lets on.'
BZZZ—
His phone vibrated on the table.
He picked it up and saw a WhatsApp message from Irene.
Irene: [Uncle Jeremy, it's me—Irene.]
Irene: [I forgot to ask—can you still taste sour things? My grandma makes amazing pickled vegetables and sour radish. I'll bring you some next time.]
He didn't turn her down. Jeremy: [That's thoughtful of you.]
After hitting send, he flipped the phone face down on the table. "You're right, Aiden. Irene really is a good kid."
'Why are we back on the topic of Miss Jackson again?' Aiden thought.
Aiden was confused, but didn't show it. He nodded and said, "She really does care about your health, sir. That says a lot about her."
Jeremy gave a small nod, then murmured, almost to himself, "A good girl like her should live a long, full life. She shouldn't have to be anyone's sacrifice."
"Sorry, what?" Aiden blinked. He didn't understand what that meant—and didn't dare ask.
He'd noticed lately that something about Jeremy had changed.
He would occasionally say cryptic things out of nowhere. His attitude toward Dorian wasn't quite the same either—cooler, more distant.
But it wasn't enough to cause alarm, so Aiden kept those observations to himself.
Just then, Ivy called from behind the screen. "Mr. Tucker, I found a lipstick in the bathroom. I think Miss Jackson left it."
Aiden took it from her—a tube of Chanel lip gloss in a soft nude pink.
He turned to Jeremy. "Should I drive it over to her now? Or hold onto it and return it next time?"
Jeremy stared at the tube, his eyes narrowing slightly. Suddenly, an image popped into his mind—Irene speaking, her lips gently parting and closing, soft and glossy.
So this was what she'd been wearing. No wonder they looked so plush… like they'd be so easy to kiss.
