They shook hands to say goodbye, but just as Irene was about to turn away, Kelly tightened her grip and pulled her in, lowering her voice with a sly smile. "Miss Jackson, if you can convince Austin to unblock me on WhatsApp, I'll give you a 40% discount on this case. Family and friends rate.
"And if you manage to help me win him over? I'll represent you for free."
She winked. "What do you say? Think it over?"
Kelly clearly had her sights set on Austin—and she wasn't letting any chance slip by.
Irene cast a quick glance at Kelly's plunging neckline, then smiled. "I'll pass your message along to Austin. As for the rest… that's his decision."
In other words, she'd deliver the pitch, but matchmaking duties weren't on the table.
Kelly didn't take offense. "You really are a good sister. Not quite how the rumors make you out to be."
"Oh?" Irene raised an eyebrow. "And what do the rumors say?"
"Well… let's just say none of them are flattering. Word is you don't get along with your family. And that dating Dorian was just your way of climbing the social ladder—and stomping on the Jackson family while you were at it."
The same tired old rumors.
In her previous life, gossip like that had spread far and wide in Eldraeth City. Everyone believed Irene had cut ties with the Jackson family. When she got married, not a single family member attended the wedding.
So when tragedy struck her younger brothers later, no one ever suspected Dorian.
To outsiders, the Jackson and Barnes families seemed to have no connection—no conflict, no entanglement.
Dorian had no reason to go after the Jackson family.
That thought brought a shadow to Irene's face. Her tone turned serious. "Ms. Webb, if you hear anyone spreading rumors like that again, do me a favor: remember their names.
"Defamation is a crime—and I intend to press charges. All of them."
Kelly's smile widened. "That's exactly the way to handle it."
"I'll wait for your good news. Bye for now." With that, she hopped into her car and drove off.
After turning over all the evidence of Shelby's crimes to the police, Irene picked up some imported fruit and headed to the Jackson family.
She'd already called ahead to let Gwen know she was coming.
When she walked into the living room, she was surprised to see Oliver and Elias—and their wives—already there.
She handed the fruit to the housekeeper and greeted each elder politely. "Gwen, Oliver, Elias, good afternoon.
"Everyone's here?"
"I heard you were stopping by, so I asked your uncles to come home too," Gwen said with a knowing smile. "You're here to talk about something serious, right? Let's eat first, then talk."
Irene nodded.
The Jackson family was large, and they had never formally split up.
When everyone was home, they needed two full tables for a meal.
But now that most of the younger generation were off at school or working, lunchtime was quieter—just one table today.
They sat around a big round dining table. Irene's seat was next to Sasha Jackson.
It had been seven years since Irene was brought back into the family at eighteen. Yet she could count on one hand the times she'd sat at the table with the elders like this.
She'd always had mixed feelings about the Jackson family. During college, she chose to live on campus and spent holidays interning or working in the Viremont City.
After graduation, she'd bought her own place with her own money—and visits home became even rarer.
"Irene."
Elias broke the silence. "Mathew mentioned you asked him for Kelly's contact info. Something happen at work?"
Everyone at the table turned to look at her, concern in their eyes.
Irene set down her fork, looked up, and took in their faces. They were really… worried about her. A tight, unfamiliar ache pressed in her chest.
'So this… this is what it feels like to be cared for by family,' she thought.
"I contacted Ms. Webb to help me deal with Shelby's case," she said calmly.
At that, everyone quietly set down their fork, waiting for her to continue.
