Irene couldn't help shaking with laughter at Valerie's bold words.
Valerie thought Irene was brushing off her suggestion as unreliable, but then heard Irene say, "No wonder we're soul sisters! You just read my mind.
"I've done my research—Jeremy's condition isn't hereditary."
Valerie's jaw dropped in surprise. "Wait, you're actually into him?"
Irene grinned. "Mmm-hmm."
Valerie's eyes sparkled with mischief—the alcohol haze lifted instantly, leaving her wide awake.
"Way to go! Our Rini's finally showing some backbone!" Valerie beamed with pride.
Valerie rubbed her hands together excitedly, "Dorian's sneaking around with his childhood sweetheart behind your back, so it's only fair you hook up with his Uncle Jeremy on the sly!"
Valerie grinned and said, "Just imagine—after you have Jeremy's baby, you show up at the prison with your kid to visit those cheating scumbags. Make them kneel and call you Auntie by marriage—now that would be the ultimate revenge!"
Irene wasn't nearly as bold as Valerie. "You really do think big! This whole baby-making scheme? We're nowhere near making it happen," she teased.
Valerie smirked mischievously and joked, "How about we spike his drink and just take him by force?"
Irene said coolly, "So I'd end up in the detention center on rape charges, and you'd have a bestie doing time for sexual misconduct?"
Valerie's face fell in exasperation.
As an undercover cop, Valerie knew full well this was illegal and out of the question—it was just empty talk.
Valerie grinned and said, "But anyway, I totally support you having a baby with Jeremy. I've even picked out a name for your little one—how about 'Irenemy'? You know, combining your names!"
"Or how about 'Breed Jackson' or 'Mix Jackson'?" Valerie smirked mischievously.
"Oh, get lost!" Irene pinned Valerie to the bed and covered her chatterbox mouth with a pillow.
But after Valerie's antics, Irene no longer felt nervous.
Irene thought to herself, 'It was just a misdirected text—not like I actually hired a male escort. Why am I freaking out?'
Anyway...
Irene picked up her phone again, opened her chat with Jeremy, and stared at the four consecutive messages he'd sent. A mischievous, cat-that-got-the-cream smile spread across her face.
She teased inwardly, 'Oh? Since when did Jeremy care this much about his nephew's girlfriend?'
The next morning, after getting up, Irene first called Ruth to explain why she hadn't come home the previous night, then texted Anthony to take a half-day leave.
Only then did Irene gather her thoughts and reply to Jeremy.
Irene: [Mr. Tucker, sorry about last night. I got a little drunk and lost a dare during Truth or Dare with my friends... That's why I sent those messages.]
Irene: [Mr. Tucker, my phone died last night, so I only saw your messages this morning. Sorry to have made you worry.]
Valerie, toothbrush still in her mouth, leaned against Irene's shoulder, peering at the messages she was typing.
She grinned and said, "Lies just roll off your tongue, Rini. You're so sneaky!"
Irene chuckled, "All the world's a stage, and lies are just part of the script."
Valerie nodded and said, "Can't argue with that."
Valerie had returned for two reasons: to update Irene on Kevin, and to visit her father's grave.
Valerie's father, Layton Ward, was a narcotics officer who died in the line of duty. Yet his sacrifice couldn't be publicly honored—no tombstone was permitted, no memorial services allowed.
That was done to protect the surviving family members.
To this day, Valerie had never once been able to visit her father's grave to pay her respects.
After checking out, Irene drove Valerie to a town store to buy some flowers. Then, by a small stream on the outskirts, they put down the flowers and paid their respects in private.
On the way back, Valerie suddenly turned to Irene and said, "I want to make it out alive."
Irene was driving.
At those words, she shot a glance at Valerie before refocusing on the road.
Irene glanced at her and asked softly, "Why the sudden change of heart?"
Valerie smiled warmly and said, "I want to grow old with you, raise the kid together, and when Aunt Louisa and Uncle Mack are gone someday, I'll be there for them till the very end.
"The world is wonderful—I still want to try beef steak and see all the magnificent landscapes our country has to offer.
"Rini, I'm going to fight to stay alive."
At those words, Irene felt a warm surge of relief.
Valerie changed the subject with a wry smile and said, "If I don't make it out alive, the Ward family line ends with me. At least Dad and I will finally get to share a gravestone."
