"Grandma, we're living in a society governed by law now—you can't just go around killing people, you know," Irene said soothingly, gently patting Ruth's trembling hand.
Of course Ruth knew that murder was against the law—those were just angry words. She snapped, "So you're just going to let him hurt you?"
Ruth's heart ached for Irene, her eyes burning with fury.
"Rini, my poor dear! You've had such a hard life since you were little. You finally grew into a fine young woman, ready to settle down, only to run into that bastard!"
Worried that Ruth might get too upset, Irene quickly reassured her, "Grandma, don't worry. I won't just sit back and let anyone walk all over me."
"I've got a plan," Irene said firmly.
"I'm going to lure the snake out of its hole," Irene declared. "I'll make that viper Dorian expose his own crimes—and personally send him to prison!"
Having raised Irene herself, Ruth had absolute faith in her granddaughter's abilities.
But Dorian was downright venomous.
Besides, his family's influence was so immense that the Jackson family couldn't rival it.
"Rini, going up against a viper like Dorian is dangerous. I'm worried sick about you," Ruth said, fearing Irene might be outmaneuvered if she wasn't careful.
Ruth said anxiously, "Why don't we just hand the evidence we've collected to the police?"
Irene shook her head solemnly. "Absolutely not. Even if we submit this evidence to the police, it won't be enough to convict Dorian. At best, it'll only make him a suspect."
"After all, it's just my guess," Irene said firmly.
But what she truly desired was for Dorian to be abandoned by all, stripped of everything, and left to rot in darkness for the rest of his days.
"Besides," Irene said grimly, "with the Barnes and Tucker families backing him, they'd destroy us before we could even get him thrown in jail."
Ruth suddenly fell silent.
Her expression grew heavy as she absently ran her fingers over the bracelet on her left wrist.
It was a gold-clad gem bracelet.
Ever since Irene could remember, Ruth had always worn that bracelet on her wrist.
Whenever Ruth had something weighing on her mind, she would absentmindedly twist the bracelet around her wrist.
Looking at Irene's youthful, radiant face, Ruth's expression clouded with worry. Lost in thought, she murmured regretfully, "If only we had some real backing, influence, or even just a few connections…"
With newfound determination flashing in her eyes, Ruth said, "Rini, order me some envelopes online. I need them."
"What for?" Irene asked.
Ruth said, "I want to write a few letters to my old acquaintances—see if any of them are still breathing."
Those "old friends" Ruth mentioned must have been locals in Abrotei City.
Irene figured Ruth just wanted to catch up with old friends from her former home. "Sure, I'll buy you some envelopes when I get back," she promised.
Irene asked, "But it's been decades. Their addresses might have changed, right?"
"Let's give it a try," Ruth said with quiet determination.
"Okay, Grandma," Irene replied warmly.
Back at the apartment, Irene ordered a stack of envelopes online for Ruth, even picking out some beautiful stamps to go with them.
At the time, she didn't give it much thought.
Little did Irene know that Ruth was quietly laying the groundwork for her.
Back in the day, the Patterson family went to great lengths to steer clear of power struggles and trouble. So much so that Ruth even staged her and her father's deaths, assumed new identities, and went into hiding in the countryside of Draymont City, living as ordinary people.
Now, with one foot already in the grave, Ruth found herself going against her lifelong principles—reaching out to those people she had once sworn to avoid.
She wondered if those people had all kicked the bucket yet.
Early the next morning, Irene got ready, grabbed her bag, and headed to the dining room.
Ruth had prepared a nourishing bowl of chicken noodle soup.
