Irene was in the kitchen scooping soup when she suddenly heard Ruth say, "Rini, ask the office cleaning lady to keep looking after those chubby cats. I'm going to Viremont City."
Irene was utterly shocked, thinking Ruth must be pulling her leg.
She set down her bowl and turned to face Ruth, who was standing in the living room, stunned by what she'd just heard.
Today, Ruth wore a silk dress, her silver hair neatly combed into a neat bun at the back of her head.
She even wore a pair of pearl earrings.
Over the years, Irene had bought Ruth all kinds of outfits.
She'd bought everything from comfy loungewear for home, to sturdy hiking gear for seniors for mountain trips, and even elegant dresses and outfits for formal occasions.
But Ruth rarely wore them—she only brought them out for truly special occasions.
This was quite a formal outfit for Ruth, lending her an air of understated elegance and quiet mystique.
In this refined attire, Ruth even outshone Gwen in elegance.
No one would ever guess that Ruth was a country woman. Anyone would think she was the dignified lady of a wealthy family.
Irene's breath caught at the sight.
Feeling a bit shy, Ruth smoothed her neatly combed hair and brushed the crease-free skirt of her dress, then beamed at Irene. "What do you think, Irene? I'm still not quite used to dressing like this yet."
Irene exclaimed, "You look gorgeous, Grandma!"
"Absolutely stunning!" Irene couldn't help but pull out her phone and snap a few photos of Ruth to capture the moment.
Seeing how dressed up Ruth was, Irene knew her grandma was serious. "Grandma, what are you going to Viremont City for?"
"You gave away your lucky necklace, so I'm going to Byress Church to get you a new one." Ever since Ruth learned the true colors of that venomous Dorian, she'd been restless with worry.
Lucky charms may not actually work, but they did give people some peace of mind.
One's mindset shaped his energy field.
When one's energy stayed strong, everything would naturally fall into place.
Irene had guessed as much. "Grandma, Viremont City is so far away…"
Ruth was elderly. Irene was worried about her traveling to Viremont City alone. So, she said with concern. "How about I take some time off work and go with you?"
'I can bring my laptop and work remotely,' Irene thought.
Ruth waved her hand dismissively. "I've been to Viremont City before, and I remember the way to Byress Church. Don't you worry about me."
Irene frowned, wondering when Ruth had ever been to Viremont City.
Irene thought to herself, 'Wait, was that lucky necklace really from Byress Church all along?'
Ruth was determined to go to Viremont City. To put her mind at ease, Irene didn't try to stop her.
Irene said, "I won't go then, but I'll ask a classmate in Viremont City to keep you company. Otherwise, I won't feel at ease."
Ruth considered for a moment, then nodded in agreement. "That works."
With Irene's blessing, Ruth went back to her room, picked up her worn denim tote bag, and got ready to set off.
Irene wrinkled her nose at the bag in clear distaste. "Grandma, this ancient relic just doesn't suit your elegance at all! Hold on, I'll find you something nicer!"
Irene went back to her room, opened her closet, and pulled out a large, monogrammed tote bag.
She said, "Here, Grandma, use this one instead."
Worried that Ruth might feel pressured, Irene told a white lie. "This bag's dirt cheap—just about one hundred dollars. It's tough as nails, so use it however you like."
Unexpectedly, Ruth took one look and said, "Isn't this Louis Vuitton? Who do you think you're fooling?"
"Grandma, how do you know this?" Irene gasped, utterly stunned.
Ruth said, "When Leo's daughter from next door came home, she was carrying a similar bag. Leila wouldn't stop yapping in my ear about how her daughter's Louis Vuitton cost over six thousand dollars—so expensive this and that..."
Ruth scoffed, "I can't even be bothered to tell her that my Rini's closet is full of designer bags. If she knew, her fragile ego probably couldn't handle it."
Irene was left speechless.
'Guess I was the clueless one here—I'd totally underestimated how sharp today's seniors are,' Irene thought to herself.
