Irene woke up, and her mind went blank for a moment.
Once again, she dreamed of Noah being buried alive in concrete.
Every time Irene dreamed of her past life experience, she couldn't calm down—her whole body left completely drained and weak.
After taking a moment to compose herself, Irene took out her compact from her bag and freshened up her makeup before stepping out of the room.
Jeremy lounged on the sofa, his laptop balanced on his knees as he worked.
On a nearby table lay four steaming dishes and a soup, two of which were bold, spicy Desmonian cuisine.
Jeremy looked up and asked, "Awake?"
Jeremy set his laptop aside, stood up, and headed to the table. "Let's eat," he said.
Irene was hungry too.
The warmth of the soup spread through her stomach, easing some of her weakness. Only then did Irene remember what she needed to do.
"Mr. Tucker," Irene asked hesitantly, "where are we going?" Then, almost cautiously, she added, "Should I ask Dorian to come along too?"
'Why is Mr. Tucker taking me out alone without Dorian? What's the deal?'
Irene stole a glance at Jeremy, wondering, 'Wait... is he actually into me?'
Honestly, she could actually make Jeremy cross his own moral boundaries for her, and Irene couldn't help but feel a little smug and maybe just a bit full of herself.
"At 4:00 PM, the Centers for Disease Control in Eldraeth City will host a lecture on "Sex Education and AIDS Prevention."
"I've booked you an appointment."
Jeremy's words hit Irene like a bucket of ice water.
Irene was completely dumbfounded.
'What, do I look like some cheap woman? I was doing just fine—why on earth would I need to go to a lecture like this?' Irene protested indignantly. Then she demanded, "Why did you book this for me?"
Jeremy didn't explain more.
With a meaningful tap of his fingertip on the phone screen, Jeremy then shot Irene an inscrutable look.
It was as if Jeremy was silently asking Irene, 'You know why, don't you?'
Irene instantly caved.
She thought to herself, 'Damn it! Still because of that text!'
Irene declared solemnly, "Mr. Tucker, I swear I wasn't fooling around with anyone. I didn't hire a male escort that night either—it was all just a misunderstanding."
Jeremy remained utterly unmoved by her explanation—dead set on sending Irene to that educational lecture.
He said coldly, "Eat up. I'll take you to the lecture after."
Irene felt she was doomed. Even the food lost its appeal.
After the meal, Jeremy actually accompanied Irene to the Eldraeth CDC himself.
Jeremy handed Irene an access pass and instructed her, "Put this on. Someone inside will meet you.
"I'll be waiting for you out here."
He was clearly there to keep an eye on her, making sure she listened to the entire lecture from start to finish.
"Come on, Mr. Tucker, we're already here—might as well go listen together, right?"
Irene taunted, 'Bring it on! Let's make each other suffer!'
Jeremy fixed Irene with an intense stare, his dark eyes boring into her.
Irene's heart skipped a beat. Just as she was about to back down and get out of the car alone, she saw Jeremy unbuckle his seatbelt. "Fine, let's listen together," he said.
Irene was at a loss for words.
"Not done yet," Jeremy said sternly. "After the lecture, I want a write-up from you."
"I'll review it myself," Jeremy said.
With that, Jeremy got out of the car.
Irene thought, 'Now I know what it's like to shoot myself in the foot.
'Great. I was only supposed to sit through a lecture, and now I have to write a damn reflection paper on top of it!
'What did I do to deserve this?'
Upon entering the lecture hall, Irene was stunned to realize they were the only attendees!
Sitting front and center in the first row, Irene turned to Jeremy and asked, "Why is it just the two of us?"
Jeremy said, "Professor Lambert is here at my request—this lecture is exclusively for you."
Irene was at a loss for words.
'Talk about overkill!' Irene thought to herself.
Irene couldn't help but mentally roast Jeremy for being so heartless. Just then, Professor Judson Lambert—the director of the Eldraeth CDC and a lecturer at the local medical school—walked onto the stage, laptop in hand.
Judson launched straight into his no-nonsense educational presentation.
Without any preamble, Judson immediately played a video clip.
It was raw footage filmed at Eldraeth's AIDS CDC, showing patients—almost all of them in the advanced stages.
The footage was brutally raw—completely uncensored. Irene could clearly see the patients' bodies covered in extensive, festering sores.
Irene's stomach churned with discomfort. Instinctively, she tried to look away, but suddenly, five icy fingers gripped her chin, forcing her to face forward.
Jeremy commanded, "Watch carefully, Irene."
