The more outstanding and independent-minded Irene became, the harder she was to control.
Even Shelby, Irene's own birth mother, was stripped of everything and couldn't escape prison because of her schemes.
Dorian wondered, 'If she ever finds out I'm only getting close to her to harvest her heart for Amaris, will she just let it slide?'
Dorian joked, "So, if I ever wronged you, would you scheme against me like this too?"
Irene shot back, "What, planning to commit a crime?"
Dorian forced a strained smile.
As the third son of the Barnes family and the general manager of the Barnes Group, staying completely away from gray areas was never really an option.
He was not exactly clean.
"So if I crossed the line, would you really turn me in? Play the righteous one and send me to jail?" Dorian asked, half-mocking.
Irene fell silent, her eyes fixed on Dorian with a piercing, unwavering intensity.
Irene had a pair of captivating eyes that sparkled with warmth and charm when she smiled.
But when she grew serious, her pupils revealed a cold, piercing glint—like the fierce gaze of a leopard.
Dorian squirmed under her piercing gaze.
"Dorian." Irene warned him sternly, "Don't you dare do anything illegal.
"I was raised to honor integrity and the law. I'd rather be a widow than a wife to a criminal."
Dorian looked displeased—he hadn't expected Irene to be so ruthless.
After a long silence, he finally smiled, flicked Irene's nose, and teased in mock seriousness, "How cruel! Would you really turn your husband in?"
Irene's cheeks turned pink. She pouted, looking adorably shy, and said, "Nonsense, we're not even married yet."
"That's only a matter of time, isn't it?" Dorian chuckled.
Her face grew even redder.
Dorian's mind was on high alert as he watched Irene's cheeks flush.
Irene might be love-struck, but she was far from stupid.
Dorian knew he needed to speed things up. If he kept dragging this out, Irene might catch on.
After Dorian accompanied Irene to select a dozen or so outfits from the boutique's new season's collection, he took her to a candlelit dinner before they finally headed home.
When they arrived at the apartment building, Dorian once again suggested, "How about we go upstairs and sit for a bit?"
Just as Irene was about to turn him down, Dorian left her no way out. "Irene, you keep turning me down—are you avoiding me?"
Dorian was sharp—he could already sense Irene was trying to keep her distance.
Seeing Dorian grow suspicious, Irene grew wary and mumbled, "My period just ended... I'm really not up for that kind of thing right now."
Dorian just chuckled, locked the car, and picked up the shopping bags. "Relax, I'm only walking you home. It's not like I'm planning to do anything with you."
Irene frowned but could only follow him.
When they got back to the apartment, Dorian was surprised. "Ruth's not home?"
"She went to a church in Viremont City to pray," Irene replied.
"Then I'll just stay here tonight," Dorian declared, casually shrugging off his suit jacket and draping it over the sofa with the air of someone who had already made up his mind.
Irene felt a flash of panic as she realized Dorian was determined to spend the night, but within seconds, she composed herself.
Irene thought to herself, 'So, you want to sleep with me, huh? Fine, I'll make sure your lover stirs trouble.'
She picked up her phone and asked Dorian, "Do you want to take a shower? I'll run the water for you.
"But I don't have any of your clothes here."
Dorian replied, "I've got a spare set of clean clothes in my car."
"Alright then," Irene said, heading into the bathroom.
She turned on the hot water, scattered dried rose petals into the bathtub, snapped a photo, and posted it on Facebook. [Tonight will be particularly unforgettable.]
It was a suggestive, flirtatious post, full of hidden meaning.
Amaris, who was constantly stalking her socials, would no doubt be beside herself with anxiety.
'Would Amaris really be able to stand the thought of Dorian sleeping with me?' Irene smirked to herself.
'Alright, little temptress, time to turn on the charm. Don't let me down now.'
