Her phone suddenly rang.
Irene glanced at the screen, saw Dorian's name, and let out a contemptuous snort.
Irene deliberately let the phone ring a few more times before answering, then took the initiative and asked in a playful, honeyed tone, "Dorian, what's taking you so long? Why aren't you back yet?"
Dorian said apologetically, "Irene, sorry, there's a bit of an issue with a company project—I need to rush back and take care of it."
Irene sighed softly. "What a coincidence?" she said, her voice tinged with feigned disappointment.
But she quickly composed herself and put on an understanding act. "Work comes first, darling. Go take care of it," she cooed. After all, a master manipulator would never make a fuss when her target was busy with work.
Dorian was lying.
He didn't actually have anything urgent to do—it was just that he'd gotten a call from Amaris while picking out condoms at the convenience store.
That call hit him like a thunderbolt, jolting him awake.
In that instant, every precious memory he'd shared with Amaris flashed before his eyes.
He ignored Amaris's call, but didn't buy the condoms either. Instead, he returned to his car and chain-smoked three cigarettes in a row.
At that moment, seeing Irene clearly upset yet still putting on an understanding front and urging him to focus on work, Dorian actually felt a twinge of guilt.
Dorian couldn't help but think, 'What has Irene ever done to deserve this?
'She's just a lovesick fool, completely devoted to me.
'She's already in an unfortunate circumstance, being reduced to a life-saving tool for Amaris. I ought to treat her better.'
'At the very least,' Dorian thought, 'I should be a little nicer to her for whatever time she has left.
'Even if it's just empty affection and acting, I'll make sure Irene feels happy.'
With that in mind, Dorian said gently, "Be a good girl, Irene. Go to bed early. I'll come see you tomorrow."
Irene cursed inwardly, 'Go fuck yourself!'
Leaning against the sofa, Irene stared coldly at the distant road while forcing out a coy tone. "Actually... I've always dreamed of giving myself to you on our wedding night, Dorian."
Dorian was feeling guilty—the perfect moment for Irene to make her request.
Seizing the moment, Irene said in a shy yet determined voice, "Dorian, let's wait until our wedding night for our first time, okay?"
Dorian scoffed inwardly. 'What a drama queen. Does she really have to turn sex into some kind of sacred ritual?'
Just then, Dorian's phone buzzed again—Amaris was calling.
"Alright, you have my word," Dorian finally agreed, though there was a trace of reluctance in his voice.
Concerned about Amaris, Dorian absentmindedly muttered a few words to comfort Irene, then quickly cut the call short.
As soon as he hung up, Dorian called Amaris back without a moment's hesitation.
He had truly mastered the art of juggling women.
"Dorian..." Amaris's voice was as soft as ever, like a feather gently brushing against his heart.
In the past, Amaris's antics would easily drive Dorian wild with desire and fill him with the urge to protect her.
He used to find Amaris's soft, feathery voice irresistible, but today, it just grated on his nerves. "Amaris, what's going on over there? Why do you keep calling me?"
Amaris's heart clenched when she sensed the impatience in Dorian's tone.
She wondered, 'What's got Dorian so worked up?
'Mad that I ruined his little tryst with Irene?'
"Dorian..." Amaris suddenly broke down, her voice choked with sobs, barely able to speak.
'Cry, cry, cry! That's all she ever does,' Dorian thought with irritation.
Dorian was seething with impatience, on the verge of snapping.
A steely male voice suddenly cut through the phone. "Mr. Barnes, Miss Sullivan fell from the second-floor balcony while going downstairs to get some water and take her medication.
"Her left leg is swollen—likely a minor fracture. I'm taking her to the ER for immediate examination."
When Dorian heard that Amaris had fallen and likely fractured a bone, all his anger instantly vanished.
