Eldraeth City and Halverra City were a two-hour flight apart.
Not only could Dorian not rush to Amaris's side when she got injured, but he even complained she was being overly dramatic.
But he'd forgotten one thing that Amaris was the most wonderful woman in the world.
That year, with her slender frame, Amaris carried Dorian on her back deep in the mountains for three days.
Even while on her period, she jumped into an icy pond to catch fish for him...
They narrowly escaped death in those mountains before finally making it out alive.
He had once vowed to cherish Amaris for all eternity, never to fail her. Yet mere years later, Dorian stood on the verge of forgetting that sacred promise.
Dorian realized with absolute clarity—he couldn't delay any longer.
Dorian thought to himself, 'That woman, Irene, has an irresistible charm. If I keep getting entangled with her, I'm afraid I'll fall too deeply into this infatuation.'
Only a swift cut could untangle this mess.
Dorian called softly, "Amaris."
Amaris replied gently, "I'm here, Dorian. I'm listening."
Amaris thought Dorian would offer some comforting words.
To her shock, Dorian bluntly said, "Irene has grown suspicious of me. We should cut contact for now."
The words struck Amaris like a thunderbolt, shattering her completely. "What did you just say?" she gasped, her voice trembling with disbelief.
Amaris's face turned icy. For a moment, she looked like a woman possessed. "Dorian Barnes, are you breaking up with me?"
Having grown accustomed to Amaris calling him "Dorian," Dorian was quite taken aback when she suddenly addressed him by his full name.
But she was Amaris.
With him, she had every right to be bold.
Dorian said gently, "Sweetheart, this is just a temporary measure. That call you made last time has made Irene suspicious."
Dorian thought, 'I might have fooled Irene with the family line once, but can I really keep deceiving her every time?'
Dorian said gently, "Amaris, your fall tonight really shook me. I honestly don't know how I'd go on living if you ever left me.
"Amaris, your health is deteriorating rapidly. I must expedite our plan."
Though Amaris knew every word Dorian said was true, she couldn't bring herself to accept his harsh decision to sever all contact.
Amaris was terrified!
That woman, Irene, was no mere arm candy.
She was like a wild, untamed wildflower—just a casual sway from her was enough to send Dorian's heart racing.
Amaris thought anxiously, 'If I don't stay in touch with Dorian for a long time, can he really resist Irene's charm?
'And if he keeps spending time with her, won't he eventually develop feelings for her?'
All smiles were for the new love, while the old one was left to weep!
Amaris thought bitterly, 'If Dorian truly falls for Irene, then I'll just be a pawn in their game.'
"Dorian, I don't want her heart anymore," Amaris choked out, her voice trembling with regret.
Amaris suddenly realized with dread that picking Irene as her heart donor was the wrong call.
"Dorian," Amaris pleaded desperately, her voice trembling, "can we pick another donor? There are still two other matches with compatible antibodies, right? Let's just buy them outright—anything but Irene!"
Dorian shook his head and said firmly, "Amaris, none of the other donors' antibody data is as compatible with you as Irene's." He rejected her suggestion without hesitation.
He continued, "Amaris, I can't let anything happen to you—the thought of losing you would devastate me. Irene is our best option. Those other two are just desperate alternatives."
Words failed Amaris.
Truth be told, she was terrified of dying.
"Then... can't we at least call once a week?" Amaris pleaded, her voice trembling. "Cutting off all contact completely—it's just too unsettling."
Dorian refused resolutely, "If there's an emergency, have Kevin contact me unilaterally."
Realizing Dorian had made up his mind and nothing she said would change it, Amaris had no choice but to yield.
"Alright," she choked out, "I'll do as you say."
Hearing the tremor in Amaris's voice, Dorian was torn inside.
He said softly, "Sweetheart, once my plan succeeds here, I'll come to Halverra City for you. That will be the moment of your new life.
"Trust me, Amaris. I'll love you forever."
Afraid that Amaris's sobs would weaken his resolve, Dorian steeled himself and ended the call.
