He trusted that Amaris would understand the depth of his intentions—that every difficult choice he made was out of love for her.
Dorian believed that once they made it through this storm, he and Amaris would finally be happy together ever after.
In Halverra City, Amaris sat slumped at the foot of the stairs, phone clutched in her hand. Her face was a mask of anguish, tears streaming uncontrollably down her cheeks.
She truly believed Dorian loved her—and that everything he did was for her sake.
But Amaris still felt a strong sense of unease.
For the first time, Amaris felt a gnawing sense of insecurity about Dorian—a sudden fear that she might lose him.
Watching Amaris kneeling on the ground, sobbing, Kevin's heart ached unbearably.
"Miss Sullivan, let me take you to the hospital," he said softly, bending down to help her up.
"Get away from me!" Amaris violently slapped his hand aside, throwing her head back with a venomous glare. "Who the hell do you think you are? How dare you lay a finger on me?"
"Don't you dare touch me with your filthy hands!" Amaris shoved Kevin away. Gripping the stair railing, she painstakingly pulled herself up before limping toward the living room.
Staring at his reddened hand where she'd struck him, Kevin's eyes suddenly darkened with a venomous glint.
Kevin thought bitterly, 'What the hell am I, anyway?
'I'm nothing but a pathetic fool—willingly playing the cuckold just to cover for Amaris and Dorian!
'Was I born this pathetic?'
Kevin mocked himself inwardly, 'God, I'm just a pathetic simp, hopelessly in love with Amaris!'
Back in those destitute days, the whole class shunned him, calling him "trash raised by old trash." Only Amaris took pity on him when he was hungry, quietly slipping food into his desk drawer every day.
Kevin felt as if the world were falling apart, battered by cold winds. In all that desolation, only Amaris shone like a beacon, bringing her warmth.
Kevin thought bitterly, 'Why? Why does Dorian get all of Amaris's love, while all my devotion and sacrifices only earn me a 'get away from me'?
Watching Amaris's stubborn back as she staggered away, Kevin gritted his teeth and chased after her anyway.
Kevin had always believed Amaris wasn't a villain. She was just a poor soul, driven to desperation by her illness and by Dorian' torment.
Meanwhile, following Jeremy's instructions, Aiden photographed the aromatherapy prescription from Irene and sent it to Darnell at the Traditional Medicine Pharmacy, asking him to prepare several aromatherapy sachets and mail them to Eldraeth City.
Darnell was probably already asleep and hadn't replied yet.
The next day was Saturday—the day Dorian would bring Irene back to the Barnes family for a family dinner.
Jeremy had accepted Dorian's invitation to dinner at the Barnes family.
For this formal family dinner, according to Eldraeth City's traditions, Jeremy must prepare a meeting gift for Irene.
The gift didn't have to be extravagant, but it must properly honor the young lady.
He instructed Aiden to first go to Tucker Manor and retrieve a fish-shaped diamond brooch from his treasure vault.
It was a veritable work of art—an 80-carat amethyst-citrine quartz brooch crafted with fancy-colored diamonds, sapphires, and mother-of-pearl. The exquisitely lifelike fish shimmered dazzlingly.
This brooch was a prized collectible that Jeremy acquired years ago at the Koritak Jewelry Fair auction. Its designer, Oscar Riley, was a world-renowned jewelry artist.
Every piece by Oscar was one-of-a-kind and highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
Jeremy turned to Aiden and asked, a bit uncertain, "Do you think giving this to Irene would seem too modest?"
Aiden was speechless.
He thought, 'Might as well just give her your entire fortune while you're at it.'
Aiden only dared to grumble inwardly. Out loud, he said respectfully, "It's just a token of goodwill. Miss Jackson is a gracious and appreciative young lady—she'd never think it inadequate."
"Huh!" Jeremy snorted.
'Grateful and appreciative?'
Jeremy sneered. "You must be getting old—your eyesight's failing you."
Aiden instinctively checked his reflection in the floor-to-ceiling window. 'Seriously? I'm clearly young and fit—where did this 'getting old' nonsense come from?'
After scoffing at Aiden, Jeremy scurried into the manor's private collection room and pulled out an oil painting he'd created himself.
He had Aiden carefully pack the painting into a box—only then did Jeremy appear truly satisfied.
"Let's go," Jeremy said.
Aiden followed behind, arms full of boxes, pretty sure Jeremy was just using this as an excuse to give his own artwork to Miss Jackson.
But hey, what kind of professional driver would ever call out his boss's little scheme?
