Rolling his eyes, Austin just leaned in and bit the peach pie right out of Noah's hand.
Just after taking a couple of bites, Noah piped up, "Last night, I went with my mentor to deal with a body dumping case—I even did the body pickup myself."
"Still got the guts to eat?" Noah asked with a mischievous grin.
Austin was left speechless.
He chewed and swallowed the peach pie without batting an eye.
Seeing Austin wasn't fazed, Noah grumbled, "Man, you're no fun at all. Can't you at least play along and pretend to be scared for me?"
Austin deadpanned, "Oh, terrifying."
Noah clicked his tongue and complained to Irene, "Irene, look at this kid—always acting like an old man. He'll probably end up single forever."
Austin said nothing.
"Dead wrong," Irene teased with a smirk. "Austin has no shortage of admirers—just yesterday, someone even asked me to play matchmaker for him."
Noah's eyes widened in bewilderment. "Seriously, what kind of girl would fall for a stick-in-the-mud like him?"
Irene didn't spill Kelly's name—after all, a girl's reputation deserved to be protected.
Irene walked up to Austin and asked, "Did you unblock her yet?"
Austin gave a curt nod.
Seeing Irene still looking at him, Austin pursed his lips before answering, "I unblocked her last night."
Irene noticed how cold Austin seemed whenever Kelly was mentioned.
Irene didn't want to put Austin on the spot. She said, "If you really don't like that girl, I'll just stop hanging out with her."
Austin said, "Her character's fine. She's acceptable as a friend."
Irene guessed Austin didn't really dislike Kelly and pressed, "Then why'd you block her?"
"She's annoying," Austin said.
"Huh?" Irene asked, momentarily taken aback.
She asked again, "What did she do to annoy you?"
Austin snapped irritably, "She's always getting handsy and planting sneaky kisses—what a creep!"
Irene was speechless.
Irene thought to herself, 'Wow, Kelly really is a force to be reckoned with.'
"Seriously, do you really like busty girls?" Irene asked, genuinely curious.
Austin shot her an exasperated look. "Nonsense! That's all just rumors!"
Flustered, Austin wrenched the car door open and slid in with icy composure.
Noah happily devoured peach pies nearby, completely lost in their conversation.
Watching Austin storm off to sulk in the car, Noah leaned over to Irene with a gossipy grin. "Hey Irene, which poor girl is actually crushing on our ice prince?"
Irene smirked. "You'll see."
Noah climbed into the car with a mysterious grin. "Guess what? I got transferred to CID a couple of days ago. Guess who they assigned as my boss?"
Irene shook her head, having no clue about police department affairs. Curious, she asked, "Who is it?"
Noah said proudly, "Rex Sanford—former chief of the Major Crimes Division at the Viremont Police Department. The guy's a legend in detective circles.
"Getting taken on by a legend like him—I must be something special, right?"
Irene couldn't help feeling genuinely happy for Noah.
"Rex?" Austin mused. "I've heard of him. He usually specializes in high-profile criminal cases. Why would someone like him be transferred to Eldraeth City?"
Noah might seem scatterbrained, but when it mattered, he was never careless. He said professionally, "Detective work isn't something we can discuss with outsiders.
"Well, here's what I can share—my boss is currently tracking a suspect who's fled to the outskirts of Eldraeth City.
"The suspect was an honors student in the Chemistry Department at Viremont University. He used a slow-acting toxin he synthesized himself to poison both his cheating girlfriend and his wealthy roommate.
"That guy was last seen in Eldraeth City."
Excitedly rubbing his hands together, Noah couldn't help but brag, "If I help Rex catch this guy, a promotion and a raise are in the bag!"
"It's still dark out, and you're already daydreaming?" Austin deadpanned, raining on his parade.
Nothing could dampen Noah's natural optimism—not even Austin's biting sarcasm.
He started the car, then turned to Irene with a grin and said, "Just wait till I become the police chief—then you can strut around the Barnes family like you own the place, Irene!"
With a goofy grin, Noah slammed his foot on the gas and headed straight for the Barnes family with Irene in tow.
Watching Noah's goofy grin, Irene felt her eyes quietly moisten.
Through the rearview mirror, Austin noticed Irene's eyes glistening with tears—a sight that gave him pause.
'A single sentence from Noah moved Irene to tears?' Austin thought in surprise.
