"Next time she does this, you have my permission to teach her a lesson."
"Humph." Austin sneered coldly. "Irene is the only girl in the Jackson family—our treasured one, who we've always coddled and spoiled.
"Irene is equally treasured!"
"Ruby was the one who messed up first, yet you expect Irene to just take it?" Austin's voice dripped with icy condemnation as he confronted Dorian. "If you're marrying Irenen just to turn her into some long-suffering doormat of a wife who swallows every humiliation, then what's the point?
"If so, I don't see any point in continuing this dinner."
Austin had always been reserved and tight-lipped.
For once, Austin—usually so reserved—spoke at length, every word fiercely defending Irene.
This was truly rare for him.
Noah cut in coldly, "You're fully aware Ruby has been spoiled rotten, yet as her uncle, not only do you fail to discipline her—you constantly make excuses for her behavior.
"If you won't discipline her, trust me—there are plenty of people out there who'll be happy to teach her a lesson."
Noah sneered, "My eldest uncle's wife was utterly reckless in her youth, and now she's headed straight to prison for rehabilitation." He didn't hesitate to expose even his own family's darkest secrets.
"Mr. Barnes, you'd better be careful—one day you might end up visiting your precious little princess in prison."
Austin and Noah traded remarks in perfect sync, playing off each other like a well-rehearsed tag team.
Dorian looked thunderous.
Realizing this matter couldn't be glossed over and that he owed the Jackson brothers a proper resolution, Dorian stated solemnly, "You're both right—this was entirely Ruby's fault.
"I'll make sure Ruby offers Irene a formal apology at the dinner table later."
The brothers finally fell silent.
The earlier brotherly warmth instantly froze into awkward silence.
Dorian walked ahead, while Irene and her two younger cousins trailed behind.
Austin furrowed his brows as he studied Irene's right arm.
As the sharp-witted man he was, Austin could tell Irene was deliberately setting Ruby up.
'Why would she do that?' Austin wondered silently.
'Is she doing all this to get revenge for me?'
Storming back inside, Ruby rushed straight to her grandfather Mike to tattle on Irene.
Ruby ran to Mike, complaining, "Grandpa, that Irene is clearly up to no good! I barely pinched her, and she immediately started putting on this whole act—pretending to be hurt and playing the victim!"
Lily naturally took her daughter's side and echoed, "Dad, Ruby's absolutely right. That Irene is clearly a scheming little fox.
"Dorian isn't our full brother—he has a different mother from us. If Irene marries him, I fear it will bring nothing but discord to the Barnes family..."
Mike cut Lily off without mercy. "Enough with your troublemaking. Tell me, how many truly pure-hearted souls do you think live under this roof?"
Mike countered sharply, "To get rid of your husband, you arranged for a young woman to seduce him, then set up the whole scene to catch him cheating. Scheming against your own husband—does that make you virtuous?"
Lily fell silent.
Mike turned his sharp gaze to the tearful Ruby. "Back in high school, Ruby, you hired thugs to ambush Austin. You wanted to break his fingers so he couldn't take his exams.
"She tried to ruin a young genius's future just like that—and you call that kindness?"
Both mother and daughter were scolded indiscriminately by Mike, seething with silent resentment.
Trembling with fear, Ruby ducked behind her mother.
Without looking up from his cigar, Mike remarked, "In a family like ours, we're not afraid of a new daughter-in-law who's shrewd. What we really fear is one who's too soft and easily manipulated.
"Frankly speaking, Irene is quite something. Once she marries into the Barnes family, there'll finally be someone who can keep Ruby in line."
Lily muttered weakly, "Dad, why must you always build up outsiders while tearing down your own family?"
Mike said noncommittally, "Once she's a Barnes, she'll be family."
Lily was thoroughly dejected.
