Dazed, the butler nodded and gestured upstairs. 'Mr. Saul Barnes is resting,' he said, his voice uncertain.
Aiden said, "Alright, lead the way. I'll hand this girl over to Saul. She's always making up nasty rumors—better let him deal with her so she doesn't wake up and falsely accuse me of impropriety.
"I'm an honest man, with elders and kids to support at home. Out here, I have to keep my reputation clean."
"Uh... alright." The butler complied without protest and escorted Ruby back to the Barnes mansion.
Well, that was that.
With the hosts gone, there was no more dinner.
"Let's go too," Irene was about to leave when she suddenly realized Jeremy's arm was still wrapped around her waist.
"Mr. Tucker," Irene hinted gently, "my cousins and I should be heading back now."
Jeremy casually withdrew his hand and said, "Irene."
Irene responded, "Yeah?"
Jeremy said softly, "Hold on."
Irene was confused but obediently stayed put.
In the earlier commotion, Aiden had set the gift boxes on the car's hood.
Jeremy personally retrieved the gift boxes.
He first handed Irene the long, elegant wooden gift box and explained, "Today is your family introduction day. And, I've prepared this welcome gift for you."
Jeremy handed it over and said gently, "Keep it."
Irene was both shocked and flattered.
Irene mused, 'I thought the family introduction was a complete bust, but I'm still getting a welcome gift?'
"Thank you, Mr. Tucker. You really shouldn't have gone to so much trouble," Irene said respectfully as she accepted the gift box with both hands.
Even though she was dying to know what was inside, she just couldn't bring herself to open it right there in front of everyone.
She casually passed the gift box to Noah beside her, only to turn around and find another small, exquisitely crafted jewelry box held out before her.
Irene blinked in surprise. 'Wait, is this one for me too?' she wondered.
Noticing Irene's confusion, Jeremy offered an apologetic smile and explained, "Today was supposed to be an important day for you and Dorian. I'm really sorry for disrupting your special occasion.
"Consider this my apology gift."
Sensing Irene might feel uneasy, Jeremy added gently, "Don't overthink it. It's just a little trinket girls fancy—something for you to enjoy."
Jeremy pressed the jewelry box firmly into Irene's hands, leaving her no room to refuse. Then he turned on his heel and got into the car.
Aiden quickly returned and said, "Miss Jackson, Mr. Tucker and I will be leaving now. See you next time!"
Aiden floored the accelerator, driving off with Jeremy in a blatant show of swagger.
Not one of the dozens of Barnes family guards dared to stop them.
Irene absentmindedly ran her fingers over the smooth jewelry box, her thoughts drifting in a haze.
She distinctly remembered that back then, when Jeremy died, Mike was still alive and well.
Even Mike had attended Jeremy's funeral.
Jeremy was so low-key and died young. But now, he'd turned into such a rowdy, dramatic troublemaker!
'Where did things go wrong?' Irene wondered.
Suddenly, Austin scoffed beside her. "High society never fails to deliver—what an eye-opener today."
Noah chimed in, "Yeah, the Barnes and Tucker families have had this bitter feud for generations. After Jeremy drove Mike to a stroke and into the hospital today, the rift between these two families is beyond repair.
"Dorian is caught between a rock and a hard place—he's in for a world of trouble."
Austin suddenly interjected, "Jeremy's agenda goes far beyond just Mike."
Irene was confused. "Oh?"
Austin slipped one hand into his pocket and said to Irene and Noah, "Things were pretty chaotic earlier, but I kept my eyes on Jeremy the whole time.
"Didn't you notice? While Jeremy was humiliating Mike, he kept watching Dorian out of the corner of his eye."
Hearing this, both Noah and Irene were visibly startled.
Noah asked, "Was Jeremy testing Dorian's reaction?"
Austin shook his head. "No, that's not it. The way Jeremy acted—it was like watching a father who once showered his child with love, only for that child to break his heart.
"The way he looked at Dorian—nothing but disappointment in his eyes."
Hearing this, Irene was shaken to the core.
Austin was brilliant—wise beyond his years, with a keen eye that missed nothing.
If Austin said so, then Jeremy must truly be disappointed in Dorian.
'What on earth did Dorian do to break his heart?' Irene wondered.
