Adam's words lingered in my mind as I clicked the ring box shut with finality.
I exhaled heavily, deciding I'd ask Adam to return it to Chase whenever he had a chance. He'd promised to visit in a week to show me around—an offer I'd initially refused, but his stubbornness made it impossible to decline.
Especially since I was staying in his villa, even if just temporarily.
Then there was the divorce. Adam had offered to handle that too, and while I appreciated the help, I couldn't shake the nagging question:
Why was he going so far for me?
When Adam arrived, I was in the kitchen, stirring something on the stove. The front door creaked open, and I turned to see him hauling in a massive suitcase, his ears flushed from the cold. For a second, he just stood there, frozen, when our eyes met.
Something unspoken flickered between us before I waved a hand in front of his face, snapping him back to reality.
"This apron's seen better days," he remarked, tugging at the worn fabric tied around my waist. "I'll get you a new one."
I blinked, caught off guard, and just nodded.
Over the next few days, Adam dragged me all over town, buying me things I didn't need—or even want. Every time I protested, he'd just smirk and say, "Relax, I've got it covered," like it was nothing.
The suspicion gnawed at me. Why?
Finally, over dinner one night, I worked up the nerve to ask.
"Adam, why are you being so nice to me?"
His chopsticks hovered midair. He studied me for a long moment before answering, "Why do you think?"
I hesitated, then offered the safest answer. "Because... you're a good person?"
Adam laughed, leaning in to tap my forehead lightly. "Sure. Let's go with that."
I managed a small smile and sipped my tea, pushing down the other thought creeping into my mind. It was ridiculous, anyway.
If Adam had feelings for me, it would only make everything messier. Besides, I needed him—for updates on Chase, for the divorce. Without him, I'd be drowning in the chaos back home. I couldn't risk losing that.
Swallowing the tension, I asked the question I'd been avoiding. "What about Chase? How did he take the divorce papers?"
Adam's smile vanished. His voice cooled. "He was... cooperative. Too cooperative."
I'd expected that, but hearing it still made my chest ache. Four years of memories—little, meaningless moments—crumbling into dust.
On the day Adam left, I drove him to the airport and pressed the ring box into his hands.
"Give this back to him," I said, my voice steady. "And tell him one thing: from now on, we're even."
Adam nodded, his expression unreadable. Before walking away, he ruffled my hair like I was some kid.
On the plane, he stared out at the gray clouds, his thoughts churning. Adam had told plenty of lies in his life—usually for good reasons. But this time, there was a hint of something selfish mixed in.
When Chase got the ring, his world shattered. He collapsed to the floor, his mind unraveling. The news spread fast—Chase, the untouchable, had broken. He wandered the city like a ghost, whispering Foster's name like a prayer.
In his empty apartment, moonlight spilled through the windows, painting his hunched silhouette in cold silver. His fingers trembled as he dialed a number—one he'd pieced together from memory.
All he heard was the hollow tone of rejection.
