“What are you both chattering about?” the mature woman asked, squinting as she shielded her eyes from the ray of sunlight piercing through the door.
“Nothing, ma’am. We were just about to leave,” Amanda replied almost immediately. She was a lifesaver.
As we began walking away from the door, the woman called out, “Let your mates know that the new lecturer is here, and I’ve changed the venue. This hall is wider considering your number.”
It felt like a load had been lifted off my chest. “Yes, ma’am,” I answered quickly.
“That was scary,” Amanda chuckled nervously.

Zade sat across from me in the lecture hall. I couldn’t stop stealing glances at him. He looked too calm for someone who had just asked a stranger to marry him. How was he not worried I might say no? Maybe he knew just how desperate I was.
I let out a heavy sigh. Of course I was desperate. I literally had no reason to say no. I ran my fingers through my hair.
I should give him my answer as soon as possible, before he finds someone else and refuses to help me.
Immediately after the lecture ended, I jumped up from my seat. “I’ll meet you at home,” I said, hurriedly packing my books into my bag. “It’s okay if you want to go to your actual house. I understand. I’ll talk to my sister.”
“Take it easy on yourself,” Amanda said, pulling me into a tight hug.
I rushed out of the hall before I lost him. As I got closer, I slowed my pace, wiped my sweaty palms on my jeans, and tapped his arm.
He turned around quickly, irritation on his face, but then softened when he saw me. “Hey baby, miss me already?” he winked, slipping his arm around my waist. That was enough for his two shadows to leave.
This isn’t real. It’s not real. It’s a show, I repeated silently, trying to calm my racing heart. God, he’s good at this -too good. A total flirt.
We walked through the whispers and stares in that same position. I wanted the earth to swallow me whole.
He led me to a small building beside the VC’s building. I didn’t even know there was a building in that part of the school. It was fully furnished and had everything—from a TV to a mini fridge. It felt more like a private lounge than a campus room.
“This is my school cool-off room,” he said after helping me onto the sofa. “So, what did you want to say?”
I cleared my throat. “If I agree to the arrangement, how will you explain the scene I caused yesterday?”
“Easy,” he said. “We had a fight and I was threatening to leave you. But your overwhelming love couldn’t let all we shared go to waste.”
I nodded slowly. It made twisted sense. Of course I had to be the one begging for love.
“And about my sister, you promise to take care of her?”
He nodded without hesitation.
“And what about my parents? For the wedding or even the introduction?”
He took a sip from the water bottle in his hand. “I’ve got all the characters on standby. The only missing piece is the bride. But honestly, if you’re not up for it, it’s totally fine. I was only trying to help.”
“That’s not it. I was just… curious,” I said, bowing my head slightly in embarrassment.
“So?” he asked, standing. “You haven’t said anything yet, aside from playing detective.” He stood
Oh no, is he about to leave? “I’ll do it!” I blurted out, louder than I intended.
“Okay. No need to shout,” he laughed, turning back toward me. “I was just going to check if my driver’s here.” He walked over with a smirk. “So we have a deal.” He stretched out his hand.
I think I’m really doing this. I reached out and shook his hand.
“I’ll send you the address and the time to meet me later today. I'll give you some files, to learn about me. The profiles of your fake parents and their numbers will be included. Learn them by heart, my mom is very tricky.”
“I’m a fast learner. Don’t worry too much.”
“I’m not worried,” he replied with a cold smile. “Because you know what’ll happen to your mom if you screw this up.”
My stomach twisted. That was... unsettling.
“Come on, I’m joking!” he laughed loudly. “Loosen up. I’m always like this.”
I forced a smile.
“And keep your phone close before I introduce you to my mom. Don't ignore me again like last night. Ask me questions about anything. This has to go smoothly.”
“Want me to drop you off?” he offered, opening the door.
There’s no way I’m letting him see how messy my house is. “No, thank you very much,” I replied, plastering on another smile.
“Whatever my sweetheart says,” he said mockingly.
“Let’s hold hands,” he said, grabbing mine without waiting for my response, and led me out of the room.
We walked together until we reached the cab point. He helped me in and waved until we disappeared from view.
It would’ve been nice if this was real. I’d have been the luckiest girl in school. It wouldn't hurt to have such a wealthy good-looking guy as a boyfriend. Most of my problems would be solved.
How wealthy was he to have his own private room on campus? That had to be an insane level of wealth. There's so much I don't know. I only heard rumours about the Avner Lloyd's family, how the chairman got crippled, how controlling they are and how much leadership they had over the tech world.
Zade's first time in college was such a scene. For his first year, he had three bodyguards following him everywhere, literally, even to lecture rooms. It was in his third year that he started coming alone but then, his 'friends' were his new bodyguards. No one talked to him without passing through them.
People still wondered why he chose this college of all colleges. No one has that answer.
Zade looked like he commanded power from the way he spoke. He seemed very unlike a college student.
The cab ride felt like a blur, my head a mess of thoughts -Zade’s fake smile, the deal, the weight of it all.
I wondered what Aliyah would say if I told her. Should I even tell her? She was just a kid. Ughhh. This was driving me insane.
But all of that vanished the moment I heard Aliyah scream.
“Olive!”
I ran toward the sound of her voice, only to see four men standing around her. She had bruises on her knees and arms.
“Aliyah!” I screamed. My heart slammed against my chest as I saw the bruises—her tiny frame surrounded by strangers. “What the hell is going on?” I yelled, rushing to her.
