My eyes locked onto Ronan, a hurricane of disappointment and rage churning inside me. The man I'd once admired like a flawless work of art now made my skin crawl. Those eyes—once warm, once soft with affection—were nothing but ice now. They used to be my refuge, but tonight, they only reminded me how far we'd fallen.
Before I could speak, Adeline's voice cut through the silence like a knife. "Alpha, my foot hurts… and my face. Can you check if it's swollen? I can't look like this for tomorrow's gathering."
Just like that, Ronan's focus snapped to her, his concern immediate. He pulled her into his arms with the same tenderness he'd once reserved for me. Adeline leaned into him, playing the fragile doll to perfection. The red mark from my slap stood out against her porcelain skin, her eyes glistening with crocodile tears.
Watching him wipe them away—so gently, so familiar—twisted the knife deeper. I remembered the boy he used to be, the one who'd pick me up when I fell, who'd brush away my tears with those same hands. Now, those memories were just ghosts, drowned out by this sickening display.
"Anastasia." Ronan's voice was cold, stripped of any warmth. "Apologize to your sister."
I lifted my chin, my spine straight. "No." The word was sharp, unyielding. For a heartbeat, he looked almost stunned—like the girl who'd once loved him so openly was someone he didn't even recognize anymore.
The irony burned. Back then, I'd been so careful, so desperate for his approval. I'd given him everything, hoping he'd finally see me. But no matter what I did, it was never enough. Not compared to her.
Ronan's surprise hardened into something darker. He leaned back, Adeline curled against him, his gaze pinning me in place. "Anastasia," he warned, "don't test me."
His guards, silent until now, moved like shadows. They blocked my path, forcing me back in front of them with military precision. Ronan stayed relaxed, one leg crossed over the other, but the air around him was thick with threat. "Apologize," he repeated, the command leaving no room for defiance.
Adeline flashed me a smirk before turning to him with saccharine sweetness. "It's okay, Alpha. She didn't mean it."
Ronan's expression softened—just for her. "You're too kind, Adeline. You treat her like a sister, but she's never seen you that way."
Then his eyes flicked back to me, all warmth gone. His voice was a blade. "Anyone who hurts Adeline pays double."
A memory hit me like a punch—young wolves from a rival pack cornering me, Ronan stepping in like a storm, fighting them off without hesitation. He'd been my shield. Now? He was the one holding the knife.
The guards wrenched me forward, forcing me to my knees. My wolf raged inside me, howling with fury, but I held her back.
One guard raised his hand—
"Alpha!" Adeline's voice dripped with fake concern. "She's still my sister. Men can be too rough… I wouldn't want them to hurt her."
Ronan gave her the faintest approving glance.
Adeline smiled, sickly sweet. "If she needs to be punished… let me do it."
