"If I'm not mistaken, you probably watched Mary die on this mountain."
John's voice was hollow, barely more than a whisper.
"It's all my fault. God, how could I be so blind? I should've realized it sooner."
His hands trembled as he spoke.
"That day—when we were supposed to climb the mountain—you brought that box from home. And you lied about getting lost. You were never far from the meeting point.
"It's all my fault."
Just then, his phone rang. The police.
"After further investigation," the voice on the line said, "Lily Taylor illegally purchased the venomous snake. She's now a prime suspect. If you have any information—"
John didn't wait for the rest. He tossed the phone aside, grabbed a shovel from the car, and turned toward Lily with a look of pure devastation.
Lily dropped to her knees, begging, sobbing—but John didn't speak. He just raised the shovel high and brought it down with a sickening crack.
By the time the cops arrived, John had torn Lily apart with his bare hands. He collapsed onto the ground, laughing like a madman, tears streaming down his face.
"What a fool I am," he gasped between broken laughter.
"If there's an afterlife... I swear I'll—"
Then, in one swift motion, he drew a knife and slashed his own throat.
And just as the life drained from his eyes—
I leaned close, my voice a whisper in his ear:
"Whether it's the next life or the one after that... I hope I never see you again."
My words were cold, final.
"John, I will never forgive you."
"Not now. Not ever."
And with that, I felt it—the last chains holding me here, snapping. My soul unraveled, dissolving into nothing.
But John heard me. His eyes widened in horror, and with one last, desperate breath—he was gone.
