John sped toward the mountain, his grip tight on the steering wheel as he shouted into the intercom again and again.
Silence.
He slammed the accelerator harder, his jaw clenched. "Hold on! I'm coming!"
This whole mess was his fault. He'd been the one to push for this trip, dragging me along despite my protests.
I'd just found out I was pregnant. But before I could even tell him, we'd fought—because of the mountain. Because of her.
Lily, one of the hikers in our group, had gushed about how breathtaking the scenery was up there. John, ever the eager adventurer, had latched onto the idea instantly.
"It's too remote. It's dangerous," I'd argued.
"That's the whole point!" Lily had chimed in, flashing that practiced smile. "Real nature is untamed. That's what makes it special."
John had nodded like she'd just handed down wisdom from the gods. And when I tried to back out? He'd snapped.
"You're always making trouble!" He'd shoved me aside, striding ahead with Lily, their laughter trailing behind them.
"John," Lily had said, casting a glance back at me, "is it really okay to leave Mary here alone? It's not safe."
As if she cared. She was dressed more for a yoga retreat than a hike, her tight outfit leaving little to the imagination.
"Lily's just being considerate," John had scoffed, shooting me an impatient glare. "Grow up. Stop being so petty."
Then he'd turned right back to her, his voice softening like I wasn't even there.
I didn't dare stay behind. So I followed, my steps heavy, my stomach twisting with dread.
Then—of course—Lily "tripped." A bush somehow snagged her yoga pants, tearing them just enough to reveal a long scratch on her calf.
John was at her side in an instant, panic written all over his face.
"Are you okay?" He fussed over her like she was made of glass, helping her up with exaggerated care.
The second her foot touched the ground, she let out a dramatic gasp and collapsed against him, cheeks flushed.
"John… I don't think I can walk. But—oh God, this is so embarrassing."
Her eyes? Locked on him. Not a shred of actual pain in them.
"Get on my back," he said without hesitation, crouching down.
"Oh, no, I couldn't… Mary's right here. I'll manage!"
"Forget her," he muttered, shooting me a dismissive glare. "I'm the team leader. It's my job to take care of everyone."
And just like that, he hoisted her up.
As he carried her away, Lily peeked over his shoulder—and smirked at me.
Then everything went wrong.
We got separated in the dense forest. And then—the snake.
A viper. Venomous.
I bandaged the wound fast, but when I reached for the intercom—it was gone.
John had given mine to Lily earlier, claiming hers was broken. "You two can share," he'd said, like it was nothing.
My phone had no signal.
I screamed until my voice cracked.
Miraculously, Lucy and the others heard me. They hauled me down the mountain, my vision already blurring.
At the base, I saw John. Relief flooded me—until he cut me off before I could even speak.
"Lily's still up there!" he barked, already turning away. "She just radioed—she's lost. I have to go."
I reached for him, my lips trembling, but the world spun.
The last thing I heard before everything went black was his scoff.
"God, if you're jealous of her, just say it. Did you really have to pull this stunt to stop me?"
Then—nothing.
Silence.
