John found Lily surprisingly quickly - she'd been hiding just behind a nearby hillside the whole time. What shocked me was how casually John reacted, immediately comforting her with tender concern.
When they returned to camp, Lucy and the others had already left with my lifeless body. John kept glancing around, expecting me to come running to him like always. His confusion was palpable when he realized no one remained.
"That's odd," he muttered, scanning the empty campsite. "Where did everyone go?"
His attention shifted to Lily, who stood with her head bowed in apparent pain. "Lily? Are you okay?" he asked, his voice laced with worry.
Lily lifted her pale face weakly. "John...I think my wound might be infected. I feel so dizzy..." Her words trailed off as she collapsed into his arms.
In that moment, nothing else mattered to John. He scooped her up and raced to the car, speeding toward the nearest hospital. The contrast stung - his tender care for her versus the cold indifference he'd shown me during my final moments.
Meanwhile, my spirit drifted helplessly toward the city, where I discovered Lucy's group had taken my body to the hospital and called my mother. The sight of me on that stretcher shattered her. She collapsed in grief, her anguished sobs echoing through the emergency room.
My mother had sacrificed everything to raise me alone after my father abandoned us. She'd never interfered with my choices - not my hobbies, not even my questionable decision to marry John. Now, through tears of regret, she cried, "Mary, if only I'd stopped you from that hike...from being with that man..."
Her pain pierced my spectral heart. Then John's frantic voice cut through the hospital chaos. I turned to see him charging through the doors with Lily draped across his back, screaming, "DOCTORS! HELP! SHE'S DYING!"
Medical staff came running, only to be intercepted by my furious mother. She took one look at John cradling Lily and something inside her snapped. Before he could finish explaining Lily's "emergency," my mother's palm connected with his face in a resounding slap.
"Don't you dare call me Mom!" she seethed, eyes blazing. John barely dodged her second swing. "Mom, you've got this all wrong—"
"Wrong?" Her voice cracked. "Where's Mary? Why are you here with another woman?"
John rubbed his neck guiltily. "We were hiking together, but the others went ahead—" His excuse died when he spotted Lucy emerging from the ER, her tear-streaked face twisted in contempt.
"Lucy?" John's voice faltered. He grabbed her shoulders desperately. "Tell me this isn't... Mary isn't really..."
