"Mary wouldn't want to see you like this. Get up!"
Lily sobbed, tugging at John's arm, trying to pull him off the floor.
John turned his head slowly, his hollow gaze locking onto hers.
"Who the hell are you to speak for Mary?"
The onlookers erupted in hushed whispers, their mocking stares burning into Lily until her face flushed with humiliation.
She hadn't expected John to humiliate her so publicly.
With a sharp huff, she released him and stormed off.
The hallway buzzed with judgment.
"Whose husband is this? He's completely lost it."
"Please. Hypocrite. Did you see that woman hanging all over him? Clearly his side piece."
"Men like him are the worst. Ignore you while you're alive, then act like they can't breathe without you once you're gone."
"Ugh. Just looking at him makes me sick. Disgusting."
John tuned them all out. He stayed on his knees, staring blankly at the closed door.
He'd spent the entire day climbing that damn mountain with Lily.
By the time they reached the top, exhaustion had dragged him into darkness.
When he came to, he was lying in a hospital bed—with Lily perched at his side.
