John's lips curled into a tender smile as he pored over the meticulously recorded memories of happier times. But with each turning page, his expression gradually hardened.
"December 2023—Why is John ghosting me all of a sudden?"
"January 2024—I swear I've seen John's new friend somewhere before. She's the spitting image of his high school sweetheart."
"March 2024—Three days of radio silence from John. My heart's breaking but I can't bring myself to confront him."
"May 2024—I'm pregnant... and John's completely checked out. What am I supposed to do now?"
The words hit him like a punch to the gut. John collapsed into the chair, shoulders shaking with uncontrollable sobs. When the storm of emotion finally passed, he rose slowly, carefully blotting the tear stains from the diary before returning it to its place.
"Mary... just wait for me," he whispered.
Later that evening, John's voice dripped with false remorse during his phone call with Lily. "Babe, I totally overreacted earlier. You're not still mad at me, are you?"
As Lily's forgiving response came through, his lips twisted into a cold smirk even as he cooed, "That's my girl. How about we hit up that fancy steakhouse you love? Celebrate our second chance."
The moment he ended the call, his eyes darkened with malice.
At the restaurant, John watched as Lily giggled through her wine haze. "We're gonna be so happy together, Johnny. Just you and me forever, okay?"
"Sure thing, sweetheart," he replied absently, steering her toward the car. The four-leaf clover pendant swung from the rearview mirror as they left the city lights behind.
The jolting mountain road finally roused Lily from her drunken stupor. "John? Where the hell are we going?"
Silence. Just the crunch of tires on gravel.
When John finally turned to her, his grin sent chills down her spine. "You'll see."
He'd brought her back to the very mountainside where it all began. In one brutal motion, he yanked her from the car and threw her onto the rocky ground.
"Right about here, wasn't it?" he growled, his voice barely recognizable.
