My husband, Richard Montgomery, was in a panic. His mistress, Serena Marshall, had vanished—pregnant with his child.
He was like a cat on a hot tin roof, pulling every string he could. He even flew overseas to beg her to come back.
Before he left, he tossed me one last command: "When I return, make sure she gets the Best Actress award."
"Are you coming back?" I asked softly.
He snatched the file from my hands, impatient. "Of course I am. Are you really that clingy?"
With a quick signature, he tossed the papers aside and stormed out.
Too bad he didn't even notice what he'd just signed—our divorce papers.
Seven years of marriage. Seven years of turning a blind eye to his endless affairs.
Then came Serena.
The darling of the dance academy, a delicate white lily with an innocent face. She swore she didn't want money or fame—just Richard.
Too bad the one thing he couldn't give her was marriage.
So instead, he poured everything else into her—roles, connections, protection. He molded her from a nobody into Hollywood's next big thing.
And just as she was about to hit superstardom… she got pregnant.
And disappeared.
On our anniversary.
"Ma'am, he's really leaving!" My assistant, Chloe, burst in the moment Richard was gone. "Aren't you going to stop him? He promised you—"
He'd promised to spend our seventh anniversary together. I'd planned everything perfectly.
Then I remembered the first time I met Serena.
Richard had raved about her talent, insisting I see her perform.
In the dance studio, she moved like a butterfly—until Richard turned away. Then she leaned in, smirking.
"Auntie, at your age… do you really think you can keep up with him?"
"Look at yourself. Do you even have any sex appeal left?"
She wasn't wrong.
I smiled, tucking the divorce papers away. "Chloe, find my mother's jade bracelet."
My only keepsake.
I called my lawyer to transfer my assets. Told the housekeeper to erase every trace of me. Packed my things—not much, just a few gifts.
The Cartier necklace from my 28th birthday.
The Hermès bag from last year's anniversary.
The custom wedding rings, engraved with our initials.
He'd been so good to me once. Made me believe I was the only one.
Then, six months in, the cheating started.
"Wendy, don't you have friends? Why do you smother me?"
"Wendy, I'm busy. I don't have time for this!"
"Wendy, why are you so difficult?!"
Passion fades.
Long before Serena, Richard had already grown tired of me.
I left everything he'd ever given me in the bedroom—jewelry, designer bags, even the wedding photos in the trash.
Then I walked out.
I rented an apartment.
The day I moved, Chloe quit. I offered her a job at my company.
"Maybe wait a little longer…" she hesitated. "He won't actually divorce you."
I shook my head. "I don't want him anymore."
"When you start at my company," I said, ruffling her hair, "I'll treat you right."
My phone buzzed.
Chloe's eyes lit up. "It must be Mr. Montgomery! He's apologizing!"
"Ma'am, look!"
Richard hadn't texted me in years. Back when we were dating, his messages were endless—sweet, obsessive. Now?
"Ma'am, hurry!" Chloe urged.
