Richard's eyes widened in surprise when he spotted me. "Wendy?"
He took a step forward, but Serena yanked his sleeve. "Darling, I want that bag!"
Richard paused, pulling her against him. When his gaze met mine again, it was pure arrogance. "Come here," he commanded, looking down his nose at me. "Take Serena home."
The audacity almost made me laugh.
Just as I moved to respond, strong fingers wrapped around mine, pulling me back. Jason. I squeezed his hand in silent warning—this wasn't his fight.
"Wendy! Are you deaf?!" Richard barked, still oblivious to Jason's presence.
I gently pushed Jason behind me. "My hearing's fine," I said, stepping forward. "But something's clearly wrong with Mr. Montgomery's brain. We already—"
"Wendy! You're calling me crazy now?!"
"Mr. Montgomery~" Serena cooed, molding herself against him like melted butter. "Don't be angry with your wife." Her fingers twisted in his sleeve. "This is all my fault for keeping you abroad so long... causing this misunderstanding."
She adjusted her designer mask, ducking her head. "Let's discuss this at home? With this crowd... someone might recognize me."
Richard finally noticed the gathering spectators. His lip curled. "You're humiliating us. Serena's younger than you but twice as mature! Go home—we'll settle this later."
As they stormed off, I almost choked on the irony. We were already divorced. His mansion? His rules? Not my problem anymore.
I marched straight to my apartment, slammed the door, and drew every curtain. My peaceful bubble had been popped.
Fine. I'd rebuild it.
Then—creak—the door inched open. A ridiculous ragdoll poked its head in, voice pitched like a cartoon character: "Wowee! Sunshine! Blue skies! Perfect day for the amusement park, yes?"
Jason.
The man was a walking contradiction—all polished manners on the surface, but once you got past the icy reputation? Surprisingly human.
We rode every death-defying attraction. Drop tower. Corkscrew coaster. Pirate ship that swung until my stomach lurched. Each time I white-knuckled the safety bar, his warm hand covered mine.
Spring air rushed past as we laughed, the afternoon light melting my anger away.
Then, as we shared melting ice cream cones, Jason lobbed the grenade: "Why Richard?"
Four syllables that laid my past bare.
Back home, he'd been my only ally. With Mom gone, my stepmother schemed for my inheritance while my half-sister treated me like Cinderella. Only when Richard visited would they behave.
And when he wasn't there? Those texts. Tell me if you need anything. To a drowning girl, even a splinter feels like a lifeline.
"Oh." Jason turned away abruptly, suddenly fascinated by his pistachio scoop. The disappointment radiating off him was palpable.
Funny—he'd thrown me a lifeline too.
