I slipped into a fresh dress and went to visit my aunt. When she asked how things were at home, I couldn't bring myself to tell the truth. By then, I'd realized my father had remarried and claimed my mother's inheritance. Telling my aunt would only burden her. But walking back down that endless street, memories of happier times with Mom flooded my mind, and before I knew it, tears were streaming down my cheeks.
"Where'd this porcelain doll come from?"
Jason's voice cut through my thoughts.
"Your skin's as flawless as china, but those tears look like shattered pearls."
"Come on, who upset you?"
He held out a strawberry lollipop. "Here—sugar helps everything."
I accepted it, grateful for his kindness during that awful afternoon. But my sister found out. We attended the same school, and Jason was practically campus royalty—she'd been obsessed with him forever. Next thing I knew, she and her friends cornered me in the bathroom, tore my uniform, and drenched me with water. After that, I avoided Jason completely.
Years later at the amusement park...
Jason drove me home in unusual silence, his mind clearly elsewhere. He sped off the moment we arrived.
Still puzzling over his behavior, I didn't notice the eerie quiet in my apartment building until—
"Getting bold lately, skipping curfew."
Richard's voice slithered from the shadows. "Found yourself a new plaything?"
He stepped into the light—a stranger in just months.
I secured the door behind me. "Why are you in my home?"
His lips curled. "Behavioral analysis. You kept my gifts but only took your clothes—playing hard to get again?"
What?
"Mr. Montgomery, jet lag's addling your brain. Go home." I called security: "There's an intruder in my—"
"Wendy!" He seized my wrist. "Enough tantrums! A Montgomery wife acting like this—you want to be the laughingstock of—"
"Your wife?" My blood ran cold.
That's when it hit me.
"You never even opened the documents I gave you, did you?"
"What documents?"
Of course. The divorce papers I'd poured my soul into preparing—he'd treated them like scrap paper. Classic Richard. Always finding new ways to crush my dignity, to make my earnest efforts seem pathetic.
"Wendy, this attention-seeking act—"
"Everyone knows Jason Song doesn't date. Using your aunt to force some connection? Dream on! Stars throw themselves at him—you think your trashy sister stands a chance? You—"
CRACK.
My palm connected with his face.
"Wendy!"
"So what if I want Jason Song?" I spat.
Richard trembled with rage.
