"Dylan just finished smoothing things over with Scarlett and threw a celebration party. But when he texted you, turns out you deleted all of us? What's up with that?"
"Don't drag us into your couple drama!"
"Thank GOD it was just you being dramatic—here you are! You're the only one missing! Get in here!"
I smacked their hands away:
"Sorry, but the breakup's real."
Perfect timing—the elevator opened. Just as I stepped one foot inside, someone's hand slammed against the door frame:
"Girl, Scarlett's waiting for you inside. Don't push this too…"
"SMACK!"
I slapped him hard.
"She's waiting so I have to come running? Who the FUCK do you think you are!"
"You!"
"All of you can GET LOST!"
I cut him off:
"Don't make me turn this ugly."
"What's with all the attitude?" That familiar voice again.
I turned around to see Dylan walking over with a grin, his arm draped around Scarlett's shoulders.
Scarlett wore a designer gown covered in crystals.
But the real showstoppers were those twenty-four sapphires embedded in the fabric.
"I'm totally over it now, so why are you still making such a scene? Come on, I'll personally take you inside!"
With that, Scarlett grabbed my hand and squeezed hard.
The processed diamond ring scraped viciously across my palm, making me hiss and yank my hand back:
"Don't TOUCH me!"
The violent motion made everyone freeze.
Dylan's expression shifted, then he stepped forward with a smile:
"Baby, stop being mad. Let me take you in myself. Scarlett's in a good mood today—do me this favor, okay?"
"FUCK OFF!"
I shoved him back two steps:
"I told you we're really broken up! Are you DEAF?"
"If you really can't understand, fine—I'll say it in front of everyone again: WE. ARE. DONE!"
Dylan's smile froze.
Someone snickered:
"Y'all think she's serious or just playing?"
"Totally fake! I bet fifty bucks!"
"A hundred!"
"Ten grand!"
"Bro, what?"
"You really think she means it? Okay fine, small money—a hundred grand!"
"Wait, nobody's betting on 'real'? What are we even gambling on then? Haha!"
Scarlett raised her hand:
"One million—I bet it's REAL!"
"AHAHAHAHA!" Sharp stares and harsh laughter surrounded me.
I clenched my fists.
The elevator doors opened again. I turned to leave.
"Wait! Don't go!"
Scarlett lunged forward just as the doors were closing and grabbed me.
Her momentum was so strong that half my body got crushed by the elevator doors, and the whole thing dropped several feet with a loud "CLANG."
I stumbled and fell to the ground.
Looking at the elevator stuck halfway, I couldn't imagine what would've happened if I'd been a second slower dodging.
"SMACK!"
I grabbed Scarlett's arm and slapped her hard across the face:
"Do you have ANY idea what you just did?!"
"SCARLETT!"
Dylan's panic was impossible to hide as he rushed over and caught her in his arms.
"Scarlett..."
His voice trembling, he gently traced her cheek with his fingertip, then looked up at me.
Cold. Distant. Barely contained hatred.
This was a Dylan I'd never seen before.
So Scarlett really meant THAT much to him?
Even after doing something so fucked up, she couldn't handle even one slap?
"Chloe Matthews..." Dylan's voice was terrifyingly low.
Our mutual friends immediately got the hint and surrounded me.
I looked around.
Most of these "friends" were guys—some twice my width.
I tilted my chin up, meeting Dylan's stare:
"What are you gonna do about it?"
He paused.
I stepped closer:
"Kill me right here?"
The veins on Dylan's hand bulged.
I stared him down without backing away an inch.
"Let's go."
Dylan gritted his teeth and helped Scarlett to her feet.
Scarlett stared at him in shock:
"Dylan? She HIT me!"
"I said LET'S GO!" Dylan repeated.
"DYLAN!"
Scarlett was about to lose it, tears streaming down her face.
But this time Dylan didn't give in to her. He just shot me one last glare, grabbed her hand, and walked away.
I closed my eyes, trying to calm my chaotic emotions.
Picking up my towel and swimsuit, I took the stairs to the first floor.
But when I finished swimming and came out of the shower, my clothes were completely gone.
