Back in my apartment, we stared at the latest photo in stunned silence.
This one showed everything—me striking the homeless freak's head, him collapsing in a pool of blood... Someone had watched the whole damn thing go down.
I felt like I was going to puke.
Thinking back to that day, it was broad daylight but the alley was dead—everyone was either at work or taking afternoon naps. How the hell did someone see us?
Derek studied the photo with a frown.
"The angle's from around the stairwell corner. Someone was hiding there." He looked up at me. "But why not call the cops? Why not blackmail us? What's this psycho's game?"
I racked my brain but couldn't think of anyone suspicious from that day.
Then something hit me like a freight train.
When I'd called Derek that day, he showed up in under ten minutes. But the drive from Seattle General takes at least twenty, even with no traffic.
My blood went cold. Could Derek be behind all this?
He's a doctor—supposed to be one of the good guys, right? But we'd only been dating six months, and when he saw me standing over a dead body, he didn't even flinch. Just helped me dispose of it like it was no big deal.
Wasn't that... weird as hell?
And another thing—Derek's shoe size matched those prints we found in the abandoned building.
Ice-cold fear crept up my spine. I instinctively scooted away from him on the couch.
Derek's phone buzzed with a work email. Some medical conference out of state that the hospital wanted him to attend.
He glanced at it and shook his head. "I'll tell them I can't make it. You need me here."
I forced myself to sound casual. "No way, your career comes first. I'll be fine for a couple of days."
Truth was, I desperately wanted him gone.
Derek studied my face. "You sure about that?"
I plastered on a fake smile. "Totally. Just hurry back, okay?"
He kissed my forehead and gave me his usual safety lecture before heading out.
Once he left, I FaceTimed him immediately.
"Derek, I'm still pretty freaked out... Can we keep a video call going while we sleep? It'll make me feel safer."
His location showed he was definitely in Portland, three hours away.
"Of course, babe. Whatever you need."
We stayed connected all night.
The next morning, my phone buzzed again.
Another photo, and this one made my knees buckle.
It showed me standing in my bathroom doorway, holding fresh clothes I was about to change into.
The angle was from inside my apartment—taken from the kitchen. Someone had been in my home.
My hands flew to my mouth as every hair on my body stood up. I grabbed my keys and bolted.
I called Derek, sobbing hysterically.
"Derek, he was here! Inside my apartment this time!"
I could hear the noise from the medical conference in the background as he tried to calm me down.
"Get out of there right now. Go to work, somewhere public with lots of people. I'm catching the next flight home."
Relief flooded through me. It couldn't be Derek—he was definitely three hours away.
Guilt twisted in my stomach for even suspecting him. The man had literally helped me bury a body, and I'd doubted him.
Looking at the photo again, whoever took it had been maybe ten feet away from me, probably hiding behind my refrigerator.
If he'd wanted to hurt me right then...
I wrapped my arms around myself, shaking with terror.
