The moment Ryan saw my phone screen, his face went white as a sheet.
"It's not what you think!"
He lunged forward grabbing my hands, "Let me explain—there's nothing between us!"
"She just taught me photography, I swear! I never did anything to betray you."
I tried to shake off his grip but couldn't break free: "Ryan, stop lying to yourself. The moment you started looking for her in me, we were OVER."
"Let GO!"
"No, no." Ryan held on desperately, glancing panicked at the big screen still focused on us.
"Del, please don't do this to me. When we get back you can hit me, scream at me, whatever—just please don't leave me here."
"HE'S CHEATING!" someone in the audience suddenly yelled.
Ryan froze like he'd been struck by lightning.
His grip was too strong—I couldn't get away.
The girl next to me suddenly stood up and shoved Ryan back: "Don't touch her!"
She stepped protectively in front of me, making room: "Girl, this way."
I squeezed her hand gratefully and turned to leave without hesitation.
The music faded behind me.
Walking out of the venue, light rain had started falling. That's when I realized my tears hadn't stopped.
Weird. I should be LAUGHING.
I'd just humiliated Ryan in front of everyone. By tomorrow, all our friends, family, and his coworkers would probably know.
That video was probably already spreading through every group chat.
But why... why wasn't I happy at all?
My heart felt like it was being hit with a blunt object over and over, a dull, constant ache.
I pressed my hand to my chest—there seemed to be a hole there, cold wind rushing in.
The rain got heavier. In the distance, colorful lights blurred through the water.
I stumbled forward, and when I got closer I saw a crowd of people—Ryan's parents and our mutual friends.
They held glow sticks and "MARRY HIM" signs, faces still full of expectation.
"Del?" Ryan's mom spotted me first, her smile freezing.
"Where's Ryan? Why are you alone?"
I opened my mouth but my throat was too dry to make a sound.
"Did that brat chicken out?" Ryan's dad was stomping mad, about to charge into the venue without even grabbing an umbrella. "I'm gonna drag him out here!"
Seeing my pale face, they realized something was wrong.
Our friends crowded around, all talking at once: "Did the proposal work?"
"Did you guys fight?"
"Five years is no joke—whatever the misunderstanding, just talk it out..."
My vision went black in waves, ears ringing.
My best friend Madison pushed through and steadied me: "Del, you look so pale..."
"We..." I said quietly, "broke up."
Everyone froze, looking at each other.
"Why?" Ryan's mom grabbed my hand first.
"Del, did Ryan upset you? I'll give him hell when I see him—don't say things you don't mean."
"Ryan loves you so much. Look at all the people he arranged to be here tonight—he's been planning this for ages..."
Just then, Ryan burst out of the venue.
His hair was a mess, eyes bloodshot.
"Del!" He stumbled toward me trying to hug me, voice completely wrecked.
"Let me explain—that girl and I really have nothing going on... I can show you all our messages..."
Our friends immediately formed a human wall protecting me.
Ryan collapsed in the rain, sobbing.
"I can swear it... nothing happened between us..."
I looked at his pathetic state and suddenly found it ridiculous.
"Really?" I let go of Madison's hand and walked up to Ryan.
"Ryan, do you dare tell them who you went to see last night at midnight?"
"Do you dare swear on your life that there's really nothing between you two?"
"Do you dare say you weren't looking for her in me?"
Ryan froze, lips trembling but unable to speak.
I stopped looking at him and turned to his parents: "Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell, sorry you came all this way for nothing, but your son... is a cheater."
"We're done."
The moment I said those words, everything went black and my legs gave out.
