My final slap held nothing back. The force of it sent a shockwave up my arm, leaving my wrist completely numb.
"Emeric, Marie's a monster—but so are you!" My voice trembled with fury. "You want to know what I think of you? The sight of you makes my skin crawl! Listen to me—I will never let this go. Every ounce of pain you, Marie, and the whole Ling family put me through? I'll pay it back a hundred—no, a thousand times over!"
Emeric stood frozen.
But only for a heartbeat.
Then he drew a slow breath, his face smoothing into something disturbingly calm. But his eyes—those told a different story. Glassy. Swimming with unshed tears.
Before I could react, he closed the distance between us and yanked me into a crushing embrace.
"I'm sorry, Flora," he choked out, voice thick. "I'm a monster. This is all my fault. I was blind, I was a fool—but I see it now. I know how badly I failed you."
His arms tightened, his whole body shaking against mine.
"The house was empty without you. Every time I thought about what I did, I wanted to beat myself unconscious. I blocked Marie, Flora. The day you left, I cut her off." His breath hitched. "I swear, I'll never speak to her again. If you don't believe me, look."
He pulled back just enough to shove his phone into my hand, his grip lingering like he was terrified I'd vanish.
"Flora, come home with me. Please." His voice cracked. "Let's start over—I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. We can leave Mirrencourt, go anywhere you want, build a new life somewhere you love. Or if you'd rather stay here, that's fine too. We'll buy a little house near campus. You can go to work every day, and I'll be there waiting for you when you come home."
He swallowed hard.
"Would that... would that be okay?"
"Please... just don't leave me. I'll do anything—whatever you want."
If he'd said this months ago, I might've thought I was the luckiest woman alive.
But after everything I'd seen—after every disgusting glimpse of Emeric's true nature—all I felt now was revulsion.
I wrenched myself free, gasping, my hands trembling. Then, without thinking, I hurled everything within reach—books, a water glass—straight at him.
The glass shattered against his temple.
Thin trails of blood seeped through his hair, but he didn't flinch. Just stood there, taking it.
"Emeric, cut the act. You think I can forget? That I could ever forgive?" My voice shook with rage. "This hatred between us—it'll never fade. I'll carry it with me until the day I die."
I took a step back, fists clenched.
"If I could ever live with you again, I wouldn't deserve to call myself human."
"Now get out of my sight. The law will handle you. I never want to see you again."
Without waiting for a response, I hit the call button for the police. Then I turned and walked away without looking back.
As I left, I tilted my head up and exhaled, long and slow, staring at the sky.
For the first time, I felt something close to relief.
Funny enough, I had Emeric to thank for that.
If it weren't for him, I might never have found the courage to finally face my past.
I'd already made up my mind—this afternoon, I'd take a few days off work and make sure the entire Ling family of monsters ended up exactly where they belonged.
Behind bars.
When Adrien heard I was going back, he immediately cleared his schedule too. Claimed he wanted to "revisit the beautiful landscapes of his homeland."
But really?
The whole trip, he stuck to me like glue, trailing me through every prosecutor's office, courthouse, and police station in Mirrencourt.
One afternoon, as we sat outside our old university slurping noodles, I couldn't resist teasing him. "Adrien, do me a favor—when you get back, don't go telling people you came for the scenery. Last I checked, courthouses and police stations aren't exactly top tourist spots. Pretty sure that's not the cultural experience you had in mind."
Adrien just grinned and kept inhaling his noodles, not even bothering to argue.
Everything went smoothly. I'd gathered enough ironclad evidence to guarantee that.
Three months later, Marie, Emeric, and Rémi were formally charged with aggravated assault. In court, I faced the people who'd nearly destroyed me. But the hatred I'd carried was gone.
I didn't need revenge anymore—justice would handle them. As for me? It was time to start living my own life.
On the flight back to San Mirren, Adrien glanced over and said casually, "Flora, you know... I've actually decided not to have kids. My parents are cool with it."
I adjusted the blanket over my lap and laughed, shaking my head.
"No idea why you're telling me this, but honestly? Sounds like a solid choice."
