I never spent the night at the Jacob family estate—Emeric knew that.
After wiping my hands clean, I went upstairs to call him back inside. But just as I reached the guest room, I froze. His voice, raw and strained with pain, slipped through the cracked door.
"Marie, when Mom asked us to divorce today… I almost said yes. But I couldn't. If I let you go, my brother might toss you aside without a second thought. And Marie… I can't take it. It hurts too much."
The door wasn't fully closed. Through the narrow gap, I saw Emeric curled into Marie, sobbing like a child who'd lost everything.
She held him, murmuring soft words, then—as if to erase his grief—she slipped off her coat and kissed him, slow and deep.

Fading Love, Fading Hate, A Forever Farewell
"Emeric, I know you're hurting. Now that I'm your sister-in-law, this is the only way I can make it up to you. Whatever I owe you, I'll repay it. I swear."
In an instant, the cold guest room burned with something reckless—moans, whispers, the feverish sound of two people drowning in each other.
Emeric pulled her close with the desperation of a man at war with himself. "No, Marie, you don't owe me anything. There's nothing to repay. I love you—I do this because I want to. For you…"
I couldn't take it. Biting my lip to keep from screaming, I turned and ran, shame clawing at my throat.
The Jacobs had rules—women weren't allowed to leave the estate at night without Emeric.
But after what I'd just seen…
I couldn't face him. Not like this.
So I sat in the garden, waiting for dawn.
That night, the bedroom Emeric's mother had prepared for us stayed dark.
But from the guest room I'd just passed—gasps, whispers, the sound of skin against skin—
It didn't stop. Not once.
At sunrise, Marie found me in the garden.
The second she saw me, she tugged down the neckline of her silk nightgown, revealing a trail of deep, unmistakable bruises.
"Flora, looks like Emeric really can't stand you. He won't even touch you." Her lips curled. "Did you hear how desperate he was last night?"
Her eyes gleamed as she tilted her head.
"You know, that video wasn't very clear. I'd love a better look. They say your chest was covered in bite marks. Was it… exciting?"
Before I could react, she grabbed my collar and yanked it down. Humiliation burned through me.
I shoved her away and turned to leave—but before I could take a step, I slammed straight into Emeric's chest.
Marie stumbled back, landing hard on the ground.
Without hesitation, Emeric pushed me aside and rushed to her, worry darkening his gaze. "Marie, what happened?"
Tears welled in her eyes as she looked up at him.
"I just wanted to check Flora's wounds. I have a friend who specializes in scars—I thought maybe I could help. But before I could even speak, she shoved me…" Her voice trembled.
Emeric brushed the dirt off Marie's clothes, then turned to me. His voice was ice.
"Flora, why do you always do this? The past is over. You can't keep using your pain as an excuse to hurt everyone around you. You act like a wounded animal, lashing out at anyone who gets close. Marie's only ever tried to help you. What has she done to deserve this?"
Without waiting for an answer, he scooped Marie into his arms.
As he passed me, his glare cut deeper than ever. "I'm taking Marie to the hospital. You can drive yourself home."
Then he carried her away.
Once he was gone, I slipped out the back door.
No surprise—Belize didn't even glance my way. She never cared to begin with.
