The people Adrien brought along might not have understood personal space, but their genuine kindness made up for it.
I'd expected to feel adrift in San Mirren—alone, out of place. But to my surprise, life here pulsed with an energy Mirrencourt had never offered.
The treatment I received was better than I'd dared hope. On top of my salary, Adrien had secured me my own private dorm—no roommates, no prying eyes.
Once settled, my thoughts inevitably circled back to Emeric.
When I landed and saw over a hundred missed calls from him, something flickered inside me—hesitation, maybe. Then, nothing.
I told myself my leaving didn't matter to him. He was probably with Marie by now, picking up right where they'd left off.
Looking back, my time in Mirrencourt felt like a fever dream—one never meant to last.
We were never on the same path. Losing each other was inevitable.
I thought that was it. No unfinished business between us.
But I'd underestimated him.
On my third day in San Mirren, after pulling an all-nighter in the lab, I was stumbling back to my dorm, barely conscious—when I walked straight into someone's chest.
The scent was familiar, but my sleep-deprived brain couldn't place it.
Mumbling an apology, I tried to sidestep them.
They didn't move.
Irritation flared, and I opened my mouth to snap—
Then a rough, exhausted voice cut through the haze.
"Flora, don't you have anything to say to me?"
Lightning shot down my spine. I jerked back, finally looking up.
It was Emeric.
But not the polished, composed Emeric I knew. Stubble shadowed his jaw, his eyes bloodshot and hollow. He looked wrecked.
When I stayed silent, he stepped closer, gaze locking onto mine. "Flora, I'm talking to you. Don't you have anything to say?"
I swallowed, forcing my voice steady. "How did you find me?"
Exasperation flashed in his tired eyes.
"Finding someone is nothing for the Jacobs. I haven't slept in three days. And now that I'm here, that's all you ask?"
The question had been honest, but his tone ignited something in me.
I met his gaze, lips curling into a bitter smile.
"Fine. Then let me ask you—how's Marie? How's the baby? Does she still love the songs you play for her?"
His expression darkened. "Enough, Flora. I didn't come here to fight."
Enough?
Not even close.
I stared at him for a long second—then struck.
Smack.
My palm cracked against his left cheek, sharp and unforgiving.
"You don't get to question me. You don't get to fight with me. Do you even remember what you did six months ago? Or do you sleep so soundly the nightmares don't come?"
I yanked my collar open, exposing the scars twisting across my chest.
My voice shook—not with fear, but fury.
"That day in the garden, Marie asked me if it was thrilling when they bit me. Tell me, Emeric—was it? Did you enjoy watching those animals tear into me? You must have. Otherwise, how did Marie end up pregnant with your child that same night?"
Before he could react—
Smack.
I struck his right cheek just as hard.
