The sound of the lock turning echoed clearly through the silent night, cutting through the fog of my semi-consciousness.
A strong smell of alcohol entered my nostrils. I tried to turn away in discomfort, but vaguely felt my limbs pinned down, completely immobilized. Panic began to rise, bubbling up through the haze.
Then came a wet, painful sensation on my neck, and the pressure on my hands grew stronger, fingers digging in hard enough to bruise.
Heavy breathing sounded in my ear, hot and ragged.
I jolted awake from my dream to find Marcus straddling me, his eyes flashing with undisguised aggression. In the dim light filtering through the curtains, his familiar features looked alien, threatening.
His hands massaged my sensitive waist, quickly lifting my nightgown, kissing and biting my body with increasing urgency.
Red marks appeared on my fair skin, blooming like violent flowers.
"Get off me!" I broke out in a cold sweat, staring in disbelief at the man above me, struggling frantically against his weight.
But Marcus acted as if he hadn't heard, his movements becoming even more aggressive, his hands exploring more intimate areas with bruising intensity.
"We had a prenup! No interfering with each other! You've got no right to lay a hand on me! We're divorced!" I shrieked, scrambling to cover my half-naked body. My face burned with fury as I stared him down.
"You two-faced bitch! What kind of sick game are you playing?" he snarled, his breath heavy with bourbon. "Three years of marriage, and you've been pining for some other guy the whole time! Three years, and you wouldn't let me near you. Every time I look at that stuck-up face of yours, I just wanna grind it into the dirt. Well, today, you're mine!"
Marcus became thoroughly impatient with my constant struggling and slapped me hard across the face, the sound cracking like a whip in the quiet room.
The blow left me dizzy and disoriented, my ears ringing. Stars exploded behind my eyes, and I tasted copper on my tongue.
While I was stunned, Marcus ripped off his shirt tie and bound my hands tightly together, the silk cutting into my wrists.
"I'd like to see you keep fighting," he sneered coldly, yanking off the last shred of my clothing, leaving me vulnerable and exposed.
"Please... let me go..." I sobbed, tears streaming down my face in despair. My body went rigid as I feebly tried to wriggle free, dignity long forgotten in the face of survival.
Just as he was about to take the final step, Marcus's phone rang, splitting the tension in the room.
It was the cute, lively ringtone he'd set specially for Zoe, a stark contrast to the violence of the moment.
He seemed to snap out of his trance instantly, as if doused with cold water. Cursing under his breath, he hurried to answer the call, releasing me to reach for his phone.
I couldn't hear what was said, only catching fragments of weeping and the chaotic sounds of club music filtering through the speaker.
"Don't worry, Zoe, I'm coming right now!" Marcus's face filled with urgency as he quickly dressed and rushed out of the bedroom without a backward glance.
The door slammed shut, the sound echoing repeatedly in my ears like a gunshot.
I gasped for air, still in shock, my body trembling uncontrollably. With shaking hands, I managed to untie the bindings, wincing as circulation returned painfully to my fingers.
I curled up naked at the foot of the bed, cold tears silently streaming into my hair. The violation I'd just narrowly escaped hung in the air like a ghost, threatening to return.
In that moment, a cynical thought crossed my mind—I actually felt grateful for Zoe's timely call. What a twisted thing, to feel thankful to the woman who'd made my life hell.
My stomach couldn't handle so much strong alcohol, and now pain was spreading throughout my body. After being terrorized by Marcus for so long tonight...
I felt completely drained, without even the strength to lift my hand. Every muscle in my body ached, protesting the slightest movement.
I painfully pulled the blanket over myself, just wanting to rest, to escape into oblivion for a few blessed hours.
But before I could fall asleep, I heard the sound of someone unlocking the front door again. My heart rate spiked, fear jolting through me like electricity.
The sharp sound of high heels on the stairs sounded eery in the night, click-clacking with measured precision, growing louder with each step.
The bedroom door wasn't completely closed. A slender figure stood in the doorway, watching me for a long, long time. The silhouette was unmistakable—Zoe.
I struggled to put on a nightgown and was trying to see who it was when the figure rushed in and slapped me hard across the face.
Slap!
Sharp nails cut into my jaw, and blood trickled down my neck, causing excruciating pain. My head snapped to the side from the force of the blow.
"You whore! I knew you couldn't resist seducing Marcus! Acting all high and mighty at the club, then becoming a slut at home!" Zoe was red-faced with anger, her hair disheveled as she pointed and screamed insults at me.
"I didn't. He tried to force himself on me..." I clutched my aching stomach, my loose nightgown slipping to reveal my elegant collarbone, still marked with chaotic love bites.
Seeing these marks, Zoe trembled with rage, looking as if she wanted to kill me on the spot. Her eyes narrowed to slits, her perfectly manicured hands curling into claws.
"Still pretending? Trash like you who can only use your body to climb the social ladder—even if you stripped naked in front of Marcus, he wouldn't spare you a glance!" she spat, venom dripping from every syllable.
With that, Zoe completely lost control, lunging forward to choke me, her fingers wrapping around my throat with surprising strength.
"Let me go... I didn't seduce anyone..." I gasped for air, trying to pry her hands away, but I had no strength left. Black spots began to dance at the edges of my vision.
Suffocation and dizziness washed over me as darkness crept into my vision. I could feel myself slipping away, consciousness fading like a dimming light.
"Go to hell! You slut!" Zoe's hand veins bulged with the force of her grip, her face contorted with murderous rage.
Just as I was about to lose consciousness, I desperately fumbled for the flower vase on the nightstand, fingers closing around the cool glass.
Driven by survival instinct, I raised it, ready to strike Zoe's head. The weight of it felt impossibly heavy in my weakened state.
The next second, the door was violently kicked open from outside, splintering at the hinges.
