As soon as he answered, Marcus's furious voice came through, every word dripping with venom:
"I'll settle last night's score with you later. You knew Zoe was pregnant and deliberately pushed her down. The doctor says she's showing signs of miscarriage. Get to the hospital right now and kneel to apologize!"
A wave of despair washed over me. I could only instinctively defend myself: "I really didn't push her. I wouldn't hurt—"
But before I could finish, Marcus impatiently cut me off, not interested in anything resembling the truth.
"How ridiculous. Why would Zoe lie about something that could harm her own body?"
I suddenly didn't want to explain anything anymore. The futility of it all crashed down on me. Looking down at my abdominal wound, I sighed: "I just had surgery. I can't get out of bed now."
Perhaps my voice truly sounded too weak, because Marcus fell silent for a moment, a beat of hesitation.
But then he laughed coldly, his voice dripping with sarcasm:
"Don't play this sympathy card with me. After what you did to Zoe, I have plenty of ways to make you apologize properly!"
With that, he hung up, leaving me with nothing but the dial tone buzzing in my ear.
Listening to the sound, a sense of unease crept over me. Marcus wasn't known for empty threats.
But the anesthesia had just worn off, and I hadn't had anything to drink or eat in a long time. My head throbbed with pain and dizziness, making it impossible to think clearly.
I had no energy to worry about anything else and fell asleep surrounded by the sharp smell of disinfectant, surrendering to the temporary escape of unconsciousness.
I don't know how much time passed before the door was kicked open with a bang that rattled the medical equipment.
I jolted awake, my heart pounding violently against my ribs, disoriented and terrified.
I stared in confusion at several large, muscular security guards crowding the doorway, their expressions impassive as they blocked any possible escape route.
Marcus strolled leisurely through the crowd, his face revealing undisguised brutality. He looked like a predator who'd cornered his prey.
"Quite the performance, choosing the same hospital. Trying to play the victim in front of me?" he sneered, eyes scanning the medical equipment with contempt.
I could only shake my head helplessly: "The ambulance brought me here..."
Marcus had no interest in my repetitive explanations. He turned casually to instruct the guards, his voice filled with rage barely held in check:
"Drag her off the bed and take her to the 17th floor to apologize to Zoe!"
Without giving me a chance to explain or resist, I was directly grabbed by the arms by two bodyguards and dragged off the bed. My legs were weak and I was completely drained of strength, so I could only let them carry me towards Zoe's hospital room.
My IV pole clattered to the floor, the needle ripping from my arm, leaving a trail of blood drops on the pristine hospital floor.
My hair was in a mess, hanging loosely down my back. Frequent cold sweats dampened the strands of hair beside my cheeks, making me look even more disheveled.
I was deathly pale, staggering unsteadily as if I might collapse at any moment, the hospital gown barely staying on my shoulders.
Many patients in the hallway stared at this unusual scene, gathering to point and whisper, their speculations increasingly cruel.
"Look at all those hickeys—clearly promiscuous!"
"Being manhandled by all these big guys—must be a mistress caught in the act and brought to the hospital!"
Hearing these words, I truly felt dead inside. The shame burned hotter than any physical pain.
I couldn't fight against these strong guards and could only repeat desperately:
"I'm not lying... I had a ruptured corpus luteum with severe bleeding... I just had surgery... please let me go..." My voice grew weaker with each plea.
Marcus walked behind us with folded arms, showing no reaction to my suffering, just smirking coldly:
"Keep pretending. We'll settle accounts when you see Zoe."
Soon, I was dragged to the VIP room at the end of the hallway, the plush carpet a stark contrast to the sterile hospital corridors.
Opening the door, we found Zoe showing no signs of discomfort. She lounged casually in the hospital bed eating fruit, with dozens of snacks and desserts on the table, watching a comedy show on TV. The room was filled with flowers and balloons, like a celebration rather than a recovery.
Seeing me collapsed on the floor, she feigned surprise and concern:
"Olivia seems unwell too. Is it right to treat her like this?" Her eyes widened with counterfeit innocence.
Marcus closed the door, shutting out the prying eyes, and answered tenderly:
"Don't worry, Zoe. She's just putting on an act." He stroked her hair gently, his touch reserved only for her.
I felt overwhelmed by hopelessness. I made one last attempt at resistance:
"I've said many times, I didn't push her!" My voice broke with the effort.
Marcus violently smashed his watch against the wall, finally losing control.
"That's enough! Stop pushing your luck and apologize to Zoe now!" Spittle flew from his mouth as he shouted, face contorted with rage.
I silently hugged my knees, looking down as tears fell: "I did nothing wrong. Why should I apologize..."
Watching my weak, miserable state, Zoe could barely hide her smile, satisfaction curling the corners of her mouth.
She held Marcus's hand gently, consoling him: "If Olivia doesn't want to apologize, let it go. I'll be fine." Her voice dripped with fake generosity.
Marcus clenched his fists tightly, his eyes filled with towering rage.
During their three years of arranged marriage, I had always maintained this cold, untouchable demeanor, never really looking at him, never caring about his entanglements with other women.
No matter what happened, I would rather suffer alone than submit. This had always infuriated him more than anything else—my refusal to break, to give him the satisfaction of my pain.
Thinking of this, he gritted his teeth in anger, narrowing his eyes to threaten me coldly:
"Since you're so stubborn, I guess your parents' company doesn't need to stay afloat anymore?" The threat hung in the air, impossible to ignore.
