I was somewhat distracted cutting the pineapple I'd just bought, the knife slipping dangerously close to my fingers several times.
Today's weather was particularly gloomy, the air damp and heavy, almost suffocating with the promise of a storm.
Looking at the overcast sky and still ocean through the kitchen window, I felt an inexplicable sense of foreboding, a shadow passing over my newfound happiness.
Lost in thought, the fruit knife accidentally sliced my finger.
Dark red blood eagerly burst from my fingertip, slowly flowing down in a crimson rivulet.
"Ouch..." The sting made me wince, hastily grabbing some paper towels to staunch the bleeding.
"Are you okay, Liv?" Caleb quickly got the first aid kit from under the sink, disinfecting the cut with iodine and carefully bandaging it with gauze. His touch was gentle but sure.
"I don't know what's wrong, I've been restless all day..." I sighed softly, the unease refusing to leave.
Just then, sharp tire screeches sounded outside, followed by the loud slam of car doors.
Chaotic footsteps approached, finally stopping at our door.
Violent knocking erupted, mixed with faint cursing that sent ice down my spine.
My pupils contracted. I instantly knew it was my parents!
How did they find this place? The fear I thought I'd left behind came rushing back in full force.
"Caleb, we need to leave... we can't stay here..." I pulled at him frantically, panic-stricken, wanting to hide, to run—the old instincts taking over.
Seeing me so frightened hurt Caleb deeply. He couldn't imagine what I had gone through in these three years to be so terrified just at the sound of their voices. He hugged me tightly in his arms, his body forming a protective shield.
"Don't be afraid, I'm here. No one can hurt you anymore." His voice was firm, resolute.
He strode forward and opened the door directly, refusing to cower.
My parents stood aggressively outside, with Marcus and his assistant beside them. My mother's face was twisted in rage, my father's in cold calculation.
"You worthless thing, still running off with this nobody after all these years! I'll beat you to death today!" My mother screamed hysterically, lunging forward trying to slap me hard.
This time Caleb didn't let her succeed, blocking her and gripping her wrist tightly.
The force made her grimace in pain, quickly pulling away, unused to resistance.
"I haven't even scolded you yet, and you're asking for it?" My father stepped forward, his voice dangerous. "A nobody still trying to cling to my daughter? I should've finished the job when I hired that truck to hit you—should've made sure you were dead for my peace of mind!"
My mother's face flushed with rage, completely losing control, spewing the truth about the past in front of everyone.
When I heard all of this, it was as if a thunderclap had gone off in my head.
I knew my parents only cared about money and power, but I never imagined they'd go this far to make me comply with the marriage alliance and maintain family projects.
They had tried to murder Caleb. They had deliberately arranged for him to be killed.
Caleb was innocent. He just wanted to be with me openly—what was wrong with that? Why did that deserve a death sentence?
I'd always yielded to others, preferring to suffer myself rather than cause conflict.
But now hatred bloomed in my heart like a poisonous flower. My compliance had only brought endless harm.
Now, I refused to be a puppet anymore!
Seeing Caleb dare to resist, my father grabbed a golf club from behind the door, swinging it viciously at him.
Marcus watched everything coldly from the sidelines, even smirking as if enjoying the spectacle.
As the club was about to hit Caleb, I finally exploded, years of suppressed rage finding its outlet.
