The two remained oblivious to the approaching danger, still gloating over their boldness.
Zoe was still whispering sweet nothings in Jacob's arms when the door crashed open. She jerked her head toward the entrance, eyes wide with shock.
A bolt of lightning flashed across the sky, its pale light filtering through the partially open curtains onto Marcus's face.
Half his face remained in shadow, expression unreadable, but the burning fury in his eyes blazed like ghostly flames in the darkness, terrifying to behold.
He said nothing, just stared coldly at the half-naked pair.
"Marcus, I can explain..." Zoe stammered in shock, clutching the sheets to her chest.
Both scrambled to dress, grabbing clothes scattered on the floor, panic making their movements clumsy.
Seeing the messy love bites covering their bodies, Marcus's lips curled into a sudden, light laugh. It was the laugh of a man who had just discovered a joke he was the punchline of.
He calmly pulled out the expandable baton he'd begun carrying since the divorce, striding toward his so-called friend.
"Thwack—" came the dull impact.
The first strike landed squarely on Jacob's knee.
The crisp sound of bone shattering cut through even the rain pounding against the windows.
"Aaagh—" The scream echoed throughout the bedroom.
The second blow struck his face.
Several teeth clattered to the floor as dark, viscous blood slowly spread across the floorboards.
A purple-blue welt formed across Jacob's face. Wracked with pain, unable to fight back, he could only grovel pathetically, clutching Marcus's pant leg:
"Sorry, Marcus... I lost my mind! I never meant to betray you—this woman kept seducing me! I have no interest in her, please forgive me!!"
Hearing this, Zoe froze. Unable to believe the man who'd just been tender with her had instantly changed faces, she rushed forward to slap him and scream:
"You bastard! I've carried two of your children! When your company had financial troubles, I got money from Marcus to fill the holes, even sold my jewelry and bags, and now you're turning on me like this!"
"I've had enough of your two-faced, hypocritical act—sleeping around for money. You think I didn't know about you being an old man's mistress abroad? A woman like you is only good for fun!" Jacob dropped the act, slurring curses through broken teeth.
With his remaining strength, he backhanded Zoe hard across the face.
Her hair flew wild, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth.
The two descended into an undignified brawl, tearing at each other's hair. Marcus didn't need to lift another finger.
Looking at the farce in front of him, Marcus just found it ridiculous.
After venting his anger, only endless desolation remained in his heart.
Only now did he realize what precious thing he'd truly lost.
The harm these people had caused me was irreparable.
This punishment was too light for them—he needed to repay it a hundredfold.
And that child certainly couldn't be born.
