Marcus's face was equally pale, dark circles beneath his eyes, having lost considerable weight. His once well-fitted suit now hung loosely on his frame.
He lit a cigarette, leaning against the window to smoke slowly, the haze obscuring his face as he contemplated what he'd become.
"You selfish person deserve to be unloved!" Zoe's voice was raw with rage. "So what if I got together with your best friend? You promised to stay with me forever, that nothing would separate us... but then you abandoned me without hesitation for family interests, marrying another woman. Why should I foolishly wait for you? You don't deserve it!"
"With other men, at least I feel loved and warm. But you? You treat me like a pet—taking me shopping when you're in a good mood, refusing to see me when you're not! I have no security, always afraid of being discarded! Whatever feelings existed have long been worn away!"
Zoe's face streamed with tears as she screamed, her body still strapped to the bed.
"When you betrayed me with him, when you repeatedly hurt Olivia, you should have expected this day." Marcus spoke flatly, tapping ash from his cigarette.
Zoe suddenly laughed, rocking back and forth, not caring that her newly stitched wound had reopened. Tear-stained face with strands of hair stuck to it, she looked pitiful yet terrifying.
"I suddenly feel sorry for you." Zoe smirked sarcastically. "She's been gone so long, and now you're playing the devoted lover. What's the point?!"
"You truly don't repent." Marcus stubbed out his cigarette, striding forward to slap her.
Zoe's face was bruised black and blue, but she continued carelessly:
"We're the same kind of people. So what if I betrayed you? Can you claim innocence?"
"I'm the murderer, you're the accomplice. Neither of us can escape."
"If fate binds us, then let's burn in hell as one."
Marcus laughed too, but coldly, calling toward the dark corridor: "Miss Summers is mentally unstable. Send her to the psychiatric hospital."
Lightning split the night sky, illuminating their faces twisted with rage.
After that night, no one heard from Zoe again. Jacob also disappeared from their circle.
Everyone tacitly stopped mentioning these matters.
These so-called fair-weather friends, after all these shocking events, had many who'd secretly wronged Marcus for profit. Feeling guilty, they voluntarily cut ties.
Marcus realized he was the world's biggest fool.
For people who only cared about money, blinded by greed, he'd done countless terrible things.
In the end, he lost everything, standing alone.
Sullivan Corp recently faced numerous crises. A powerful new foreign company specializing in AI systems and robotics had partnered with domestic firms, monopolizing the market.
Sullivan Corp's core technologies became obsolete. Investors withdrew, stocks plummeted overnight. Sensing trouble, many employees resigned.
Board meetings convened repeatedly, but Marcus never appeared.
His irresponsible behavior angered many executives, who jointly denounced him.
He locked himself in his room daily, searching for my whereabouts.
But after discovering the GPS tracker in my phone, I'd deleted all contacts related to his circle, changed my number, sold our California mansion to an elderly foreign couple. No one knew where I'd gone now.
Frantic, he hired several private investigators, finally learning Caleb and I had recently gone to LA, processing visas and passports to immigrate abroad.
He couldn't wait any longer. If he missed this chance, he'd lose everything.
Without telling anyone, Marcus drove through the night to LA.
