"Charlotte! Charlotte Dawson!"
"Liam!"
Daniel pushed open door after door, searching every room.
Nothing.
No sign of them.
They were really gone.
Not even a goodbye.
He sank into the couch, his head spinning.
Wasn't this the peace and quiet he always said he wanted?
So why did it feel so… wrong now?
Why couldn't he calm down?
Maybe—just maybe—he'd gotten used to having us around during those seven short days.
But he loved Bella, didn't he?
Yes. Bella.
Only a woman like Bella deserved to be by his side.
Charlotte Dawson was just some small-town nobody.
A hillbilly. That's all she ever was.
He convinced himself of that again, heading to the base housing to dig out his old bedding from the closet.
The day Liam and I first moved in, Daniel made it crystal clear:
"Charlotte, you can have the base housing."
"But we're not sleeping in the same room."
"I already packed away my bedding."
"If you and the kid need something, go buy it yourselves."
Back then, I was too blinded by the fantasy of our little "family reunion" to hear the contempt in his voice.
Later on, I understood. And I stopped caring.
Daniel laid his bedding down on the mattress and got hit with a faint, clean scent.
Soap. Sun-dried cotton.
Smelled like… home.
Someone must've washed it for him.
Before he realized it, his face was buried in the sheets.
A moment later, he flung the blanket away like it burned him.
His chest felt weirdly hollow.
Daniel had spent eight years in the military—on base, on deployments, in and out of combat.
Rain, snow, sandstorms.
Always alone.
His only break from the grind was when the entertainment troupe came through.
The whole unit would cram into the auditorium, shouting and joking.
Those loud, rowdy nights felt like a reward.
He used to think that was enough.
Now, lying there in the silence, Daniel didn't even notice when he fell asleep.
It was dark when the knocking woke him up.
"Colonel Foster! Colonel Foster!"
"The show's starting! You home?"
"Colonel Foster!"
